ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's basketball team will open a three-game homestand to complete its home schedule this week – one in which it contend with the Great Lakes Valley Conference's top two scorers -- starting with Thursday's 5:30 p.m. Great Lakes Valley Conference contest against Indianapolis at Billy Key Court.
The homestand continues Saturday when the Lady Miners host Lewis at 1 p.m. and concludes Feb. 22 when McKendree visits Rolla for the home finale. Saturday's game against Lewis will be Senior Day for the Lady Miners and the 2007-08 team that reached the championship game of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional will also be on hand and honored on Saturday.
The Lady Miners are seeking to snap a three-game losing streak and win for the first time in the month of February as they enter the game at 8-14 overall and 3-11 in the GLVC. UIndy is also looking to end a three-game skid of its own as it comes in with a 7-17 record and 4-10 mark in conference play.
S&T held a lead for much of the first half in Saturday's contest at Missouri-St. Louis, holding the Tritons to 33.3 percent shooting in the first half and holding the advantage until UMSL got a three-pointer to end the first half and took the lead in the process. The Tritons took the lead for good with a 14-0 run early in the second half and went 17-of-27 from the field over the final two quarters of action.
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) scored 20 points to lead the Lady Miners Saturday, making eight of her 12 shots from the field and four-of-seven from three-point range. She comes into Thursday's game averaging 13.3 points per game and is second on the team in scoring to
Janie Arand's (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) mark of 15.5 points per game.
Arand, who needs just 37 points to reach 10
th place on the Lady Miners' all-time scoring list, leads the Lady Miners with 38 three-point baskets and is shooting 41.8 percent from beyond the arc, while Raley has made 37 treys on the year. Arand also leads the GLVC at the free throw as she had made 90 percent of her attempts on the season.
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic), who is shooting nearly 37 percent from three-point range and has a team-high 63 assists, is averaging nine points per game and
Bria Pierce (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) comes in with a scoring average of 8.7 points a game. Pierce is also S&T's top rebounder with 6.9 per game on the year after matching her career high with 10 on Saturday.
ABOUT INDIANAPOLIS: The Greyhounds are 7-17 and 4-10 in the GLVC following their 74-63 loss Thursday at Missouri-St. Louis, despite getting 25 points from Taylor Drury and 23 from the conference's second-leading scorer, Martha Burse.
Burse is averaging 22.5 points per game this season, leading the Greyhounds with 40 three-point baskets and ranking among the conference leaders in trips to the free throw line, as she is second in the GLVC with 107 made free throws. Burse has led UIndy in scoring in 19 of 24 games during the course of the season, including 12 straight in one stretch and has posted at least 20 points on 17 occasions.
Drury, a freshman, is averaging just short of double figures at 9.6 points per game and has connected 30 times from beyond the arc, while Devin Ferguson is averaging 7.7 points a contest with a team-high 64 assists.
The Greyhounds currently rank next-to-last in the GLVC in scoring as they are averaging only 62.1 points per game and are well down in the league rankings in shooting, as they're hitting only 39.2 percent of their shots from the field and just 25.7 percent from three-point range. A lack of size has also hurt UIndy, as opposing teams are pulling down nearly six more rebounds per game against it.
ABOUT LEWIS: After contending with the GLVC's second-leading scorer on Thursday, the Lady Miners will face the top point producer in the league Saturday in Lewis' Jessica Kelliher. The junior forward is averaging 25.3 points per game – the highest average by a GLVC player in at least the last 10 seasons – and is looking to not only capture back-to-back GLVC scoring titles, but also to try and get the Flyers into the NCAA Division II Tournament.
The Flyers come into the week at 20-5 overall and 13-2 in the GLVC prior to a Thursday night matchup against GLVC West Division leader Drury and have done so with one of the best offensive teams in the league. Lewis is second in the GLVC with its average of 73.8 points per game and is the conference's top field goal shooting squad, hitting 47.5 percent of its attempts from the floor.
Much of the field goal success has come inside via Kelliher, who is the top shooter in the conference at 66.8 percent and Rachel Hinders, who is seventh in the GLVC at 54.3 percent and is averaging 11.7 points per game. However, the Flyers are shooting only 31 percent on the season from three-point range; Kayla Brewer has made a team-high 30, but has made just over 31 percent of her attempts.
Gabby Green leads the Flyers with 108 assists – the most by any GLVC player -- and 52 steals, while Morgan Glatczak is among the top 10, along with Kelliher, in blocked shots with 26.
