ROLLA, Mo. – A rainout on the opening weekend of action and the anticipation of good weather during the middle of week has bumped up the start of the home baseball schedule for Missouri S&T, as the Miners will take on Missouri Southern Wednesday afternoon at the S&T Ballpark in a single game at 1 p.m.
The Miners were slated to begin their home schedule on Feb. 20 against Central Missouri, but after Saturday's doubleheader at Mississippi College was rained out and not rescheduled, the Miners and Lions will get together for the first of two meetings between the teams this season. S&T and Southern will meet up in Joplin for a single game on March 7.
After dropping the season opener to Mississippi College 8-3 Friday, the Miners had two opportunities to close out the nightcap in the win column with three outs to go, but couldn't do so and lost 5-4 in eight innings. The loss spoiled a solid pitching performance by
Anthony Garza (Belleviille, IL/Belleville East), who allowed two unearned runs and just four hits in six innings of work.
Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing) had a good afternoon at the plate for the Miners, going four-of-six at the plate and driving in two runs, while
Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) went three-of-seven in the doubleheader and reached base five times.
Missouri Southern is 3-1 on the young season with a win over Central Oklahoma and a series win over Northwestern Oklahoma State, as they took two-of-three from the Rangers in Alva, Okla., over the weekend. Joe Kinder has hit .429 over the first four games for the Lions, while Alec Alvarez hit .385 during that span.
