Lady Miners resume play hosting Westminster on Saturday

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's basketball resumes play hosting Westminster in a 1 p.m. matinee this Saturday afternoon at Billy Key Court. Saturday's contest begins a stretch that sees the Lady Miners play four of their next six games on the home court. S&T (4-5) looks to snap a five-game losing streak while the Blue Jays enter the contest with a record of 5-4.

In their last outing the Lady Miners couldn't overcome a fast start in a 77-61 loss at Missouri Southern last Tuesday. The Lions began the game hitting their first 11 shots from the field including five three-pointers to build a 33-18 lead after the first 10 minutes.

S&T settled down and hung with Southern for the final three quarters and at one point cut the margin to five points after a three-pointer from Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) with 3:10 left in the third quarter. The Lady Miners had a chance to cut it to a one-score game moments later with a two-on-one break but Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) had her shot blocked and that sparked an 8-0 run for the Lions.

S&T struggled to keep Southern off the line in the fourth quarter sending them there 11 times where they made eight of them. Desirea Buerge scored 12 of her 19 points in the final quarter including going 6-for-7 at the charity stripe.

The Lady Miners shot 37 percent (24-for-65) from the floor, was 4-of-16 from three and shot 82 percent at the foul line. Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) led S&T with 19 points while Arand dropped in 11 and Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) finished with nine.

The Lady Miners continue to lead the GLVC in three-point shooting percentage making 37.3 percent of their attempts. Raley leads the squad with 18 three's while Arand has knocked down 15 and Kabetske has made seven.

Raley leads the team in scoring and is 11th in the GLVC at 14.4 points per game while Arand is averaging 14.2 per contest and is 13th in the league in scoring. Kim Runge (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) leads the team in rebounding and is third in the conference with 8.2 rebounds per game.

About Westminster: The Blue Jays have lost two of their last three games excluding an exhibition loss at Colorado last Thursday. Westminster is averaging 67.6 points per game on the season while allowing 70.7 points per contest. It is shooting just 36 percent from the field and is only shooting 21 percent from beyond the arc. However, the Blue Jays are very good on the glass averaging 47 rebounds per game.

Kendahl Adams leads the team in scoring with nearly 17 points per game and is joined in double figures by Mirrakohl Johnson at 15.1 points per contest. Johnson leads the team in rebounding with nine boards per game while Adams has dished out a team best 33 assists.
