ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T infielder
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney), who set single season records during the 2016 campaign for home runs and runs batted in, was named today to the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America team.
Ulrich, the third Miner student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors in this school year, was a third-team selection after a 2016 season where he hit .341 with 10 home runs and 63 runs batted in, leading the team in homers, RBI and slugging percentage at .582. Ulrich, who also drew a team-high 29 walks, led the Miners with a total of 18 doubles that ranked second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference this season.
In addition, Ulrich also set a new career record during the course of the season as he finished his four years with the Miners with 418 defensive assists.
A mechanical engineering major at Missouri S&T, Ulrich had a huge post-season for the Miners as the GLVC West Division champions advanced to the championship round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. In nine post-season contests, including three in the GLVC Tournament, he batted .500 (19-of-38) with five home runs and 19 runs batted in while scoring 11 times.
He delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10
th inning in the Miners' 2-1 win over Grand Valley State on the third day of the regional. Ulrich was 12-of-24 at the plate with three homers and 11 runs batted in during the regional tournament and was named to the All-Midwest regional team.
The honor is the 85
th for Missouri S&T in the history of the program and eighth for the baseball program; Ulrich is the first selection from the program since Lee Voth-Gaeddert and Andy Hall were selected in 2012. Missouri S&T has now received 60 Academic All-America awards since 2000 and has the fifth-highest number of overall selections among NCAA Division II schools since the program started in 1952.
The Miners finished the 2016 season with a record of 39-19, the highest win total in a year in school history and earned the program's third berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament to go along with its third GLVC West Division title in six years.
