McGuire, Karsten make NCAA provisional marks in outdoor opener

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Missouri S&T got two provisional qualifiers in its opening outdoor meet of the season Friday as the Miners and Lady Miners took part in the Wendy's Invitational at Pittsburg State University.

Ryan McGuire (Hobart, Ind./Hobart), who recently finished fifth at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, won the pole vault with a provisional mark of 16-7¼.  The other provisional qualifying mark came from John Karsten (Jefferson City, Mo./Blair Oaks HS) in the hammer throw with his fourth place finish, recording a mark of 180-1.

The Miners also got an event win Friday from J.R. Frisella (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville HS) as he won the 400-meter dash in 49.09 seconds; Frisella later finished sixth in the 200-meers in 22.05 seconds.

S&T also got a second place performance from Lucas Rosenbaum (Sidney, Neb./Sidney HS) in the pole vault as he cleared 15-11¼, a third place showing from Kyle Stocker (Solon, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie) in the 1,500-meters in 3:59.26 and fifths from Logan Shearer (The Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands Christian Academy) in the 800-meters in 1:57.29 and Luke Moehlenbrock (Mountain VIew, Mo./Mountain View-Liberty) in the high jump as he cleared 6-6¾.

Collin Boner (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional HS) cleared 6-4¾ in the high jump to finish sixth and Karsten added a seventh place showing in the discus throw at 150-8.  Gabe Underwood (Jackson, Mo./Jackson HS) also had a seventh place performance in the 5,000-meters in 15:37.26.

Jaren Underwood (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah HS) had an eighth place showing in the triple jump with a leap of 44-9, while S&T got ninths from Tyler Percy (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) in the 400-meters in 49.95 seconds and Peter Simpson (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh HS) in the javelin with a m ark of 189-9.  Trace Norfleet (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) took 10th in the long jump with a mark of 21-11.

The Lady Miners' showing Friday was paced by three finishers among the top six in the 5,000-meters, including the top two competitors in Katelyn Fricke (Brimfield, Ill./Brimfield) who won in a time of 18:41.12 and Megan Schulte (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge), who was second in 18:43.61.  The third finisher in that group was Allie Wood (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley), the sixth place runner in 19:34.47.

S&T got a trio of fourth place showings Friday, getting them from Skyler Ruszkowski (League City, Texas/Clear Falls) in the high jump as she cleared 5-5, Amanda Wetzel (Keller, Texas/Keller) in the pole vault with a mark of 11-11¾ and Rachael Lawal in the 400-meters in 58.43 seconds.  Lawal also took seventh in a crowded 200-meter field with a time of 25.49 seconds.

Nicole Aldridge (Bloomington, Ill./Ill. Math & Science Academy) was seventh in the pole vault with a clearance of 9-0¼ as was Crystal Beffa (Festus, Mo./Festus) in the 800-meters in 2:24.38, while Kim Huskey (Hillsboro, Mo./Grandview HS) had a ninth place showing in the 800 in 2:27.50.  Elizabeth Robinson (Pleasant Plains, Ill./Pleasant Plains) placed ninth in the hammer throw with a mark of 128-10 and Alyson Smith (Scott Air Force Base, Ill./Mascoutah) finished 10th in the 1,500-meters in 5:05.60.

Also during the weekend, Missouri S&T had four individuals compete in multi-event competition at Oklahoma Baptist, with Piotr Gal (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) and Camille Baker (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic HS) winning the competitions with NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks.  Gal recorded 6,784 points in the decathlon and had the best performances in the long jump, high jump, 110-meter hurdles and pole vault.

Baker, who had the best marks in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump and 800-meters, finished with a total of 4.631 points, while Natalie Schriever (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan HS) finished with 4,257, while Anne Massey (St, Louis, Mo./Lindbergh HS) finished with 3,729.
