Rolla, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners welcome another old rival from its days in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) days when it hosts Missouri Southern on Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. Monday's contest will be the first meeting between the two schools since 2009.
After taking a break for final exams, the Lady Miners (6-3) go for their second straight win and look to snap a seven-game losing streak against the Lions (6-5). In its last contest S&T withstood a fourth quarter rally to hang and defeat Westminster 52-49. Raetchel Gray (Allen, Okla./Byng ) led the Lady Miners with 16 points in that contest while Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) dropped in 13.
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) continues to lead the squad in scoring averaging 9.3 points per contest while Greenwood has upped her scoring to 9.1 points per game. Aricca Daye (Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines East) and Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) are each chipping in with 7.3 ppg and Gray is dropping in 6.9 per night. Kim Runge (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) leads the club in rebounding with 6.4 per contest while Daye has a team-high 36 assists.
Missouri Southern has also been off this week due to final exams and will return to the court for the first time since losing at Lindenwood 86-80 on Dec. 10. Deb Holcomb led the Lions with 35 points in that contest on 12-of-15 shooting and nailed four three-pointers. Desirea Buerge, sister of former Miner basketball player Desmond Buerge, added 11 points while Jasmine Green chipped in with 10 off the bench.
Monday's contest against S&T will be the fourth game against a school from the Great Lakes Valley Conference for MSSU. It has defeated Truman State 94-88 and Quincy 59-54 while losing to Illinois Springfield 73-69.
The Lions are averaging 73.4 points per game and are led in scoring by Holcomb with 16.1 points per contest. Buerge is dropping in 11 points per game and Chelsey Henry is adding 10.2 ppg. Jenson Maydew leads the team in rebounding with 6.3 per contest while Holcomb and Amelia Bramer lead the team with 20 assists each.
