Miners to open busy week of play Sunday against Missouri-St. Louis

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T begins a busy week of baseball Sunday when it opens a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series against the University of Missouri-St. Louis at the S&T Baseball Field.

The series was originally slated to begin Saturday, but was pushed back a day due to the rain that came through the area earlier in the week.  The Miners and Tritons will play doubleheaders at noon on Sunday and Monday, then the Miners host Drury in a noon doubleheader Wednesday before heading to St. Louis for a four-game series at Maryville beginning on Friday.

S&T, 9-10 overall and 4-4 in the GLVC, dropped three of four at Indianapolis in its most recent action, winning the third game of the series behind a solid pitching effort from three individuals.  Micah Dohlen (Kent, Wash./Kent Lake), who was the winning pitching in the 3-2 win over the Greyhounds, owns a 2.73 earned run average to go with his 2-2 record, while Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield) is 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA; Bedsworth allowed only one run in six innings in the second game of the UIndy series.

The Miners are hitting .299 as a team coming into the weekend, led by Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union)'s .419 mark which ranks seventh in the conference.  Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) is 10th in the GLVC with his .397 average, while Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) is batting .395.

Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) leads the Miners in home runs with three and runs batted in with 17, which is tied for ninth in the GLVC, while Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) has driven in 14.

Missouri-St. Louis opened the season with 10 straight wins and brings marks of 11-2 overall and 6-2 in the GLVC into the weekend series.  Pitching has been the key to the Tritons' success this season with the league's second-best earned run average of 3.00.  Zach Sedlacek has allowed just two earned runs and has fanned 24 hitters in 18 innings, while A.J. McElderry is 2-1 with a 1.50 earned run average.

The Tritons are paced at the plate by Dominic Orlando, who is hitting .463 on the year, while Daniel Seddon is hitting .361.

Drury and Maryville will face off in a four-game set in Springfield this weekend before taking on the Miners in the coming week.  Drury is 8-8-1 overall and 4-3-1 in GLVC play, while Maryville is currently 9-12 and 2-6 in the GLVC.
