ROLLA, Mo. – With wins in its last four contests, Missouri S&T's baseball team heads to the road for the first time in Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend as it takes on the University of Indianapolis in a four-game series.
The doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday will get underway at noon Eastern time on the UIndy campus.
After dropping the first game of last weekend's GLVC set to Wisconsin-Parkside, the Miners won the final three contests and followed that up with a 22-7 rout of Lincoln on Wednesday to bring an 8-7 record into the weekend. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds split their opening series in league play last weekend with Rockhurst and are 4-8 overall.
The Miners raised their team batting average to .315 during their current winning streak as they have scored 43 runs during that span.
Tyler Johnson (Union, Mo./Union) leads S&T with a .440 batting mark, good for seventh in the GLVC, while
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) is right at the .400 mark, among a dozen players in the conference with a batting average of .400 or better that also meet the league qualifications for the batting title.
Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei), who had three hits on Wednesday, is hitting .407 in 27 at-bats on the season. S&T also has several players over the .300 mark, led by
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) at .356 and
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) at .321.
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) leads the Miners with three home runs and 17 runs batted in, 11 of which have come in the Miners' last two contests; the 17 RBI rank fifth in the conference.
On the mound,
Micah Dohlen (Kent, Wash./Kent Lake) has recorded a 2.92 earned run average with a team-high 16 strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings of work, while
Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield) owns a 3.92 mark to go with his 2-1 record. Brown is tied for the GLVC lead in saves with four.
Indianapolis has two regulars hitting better than .300 in Colin Hawk at .381 and Zach Jacobs at .333. Sean McCracken has belted three home runs on the season, while Brady Thomas has driven in a team-high 12 runs.
The Greyhounds have hit just .266 as a team in the early stages of the season, but have averaged more than 10 hits per game in their last four contests.
Matthew Kaplanis leads the UIndy pitching staff with a 2-0 record and a 3.32 earned run average. Last season, Kaplanis picked up a win on the hill against the Miners when he struck out eight and allowed five hits over six innings.
The Greyhounds – who are hosting the Miners for the first time ever this weekend -- won two of three from S&T a year ago in an early-season non-conference series in Rolla.
