ALLENDALE, Mich. – Missouri S&T senior pole vaulter Taylor Cipicchio (Highland, Ill./Highland) closed out her collegiate career Thursday by earning her second All-America award of the year, finishing fourth in the event at the NCAA Division II Championships at Grand Valley State University.

Cipicchio cleared each of the first four heights on her first attempt, then became the first Lady Miner to ever clear the 13-foot mark by going over the bar at 13-1½ on her third try to stay alive in the competition.

She was among five competitors remaining when the bar was moved up to 13-5½, but was unable to make that mark and ended up fourth over Grand Valley State's Jennifer Schornak based on fewer misses.

The other three vaulters all cleared that height and the event was later won by GVSU's Kristen Hixson – who owned the best performance of the season in the event prior to nationals – with a clearance of 14-5¼.

During the 2014 season, Cipicchio finished in a tie for fourth at the NCAA's indoor meet in March and also won the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship in the pole vault at both of the conference meets, doing so in league record fashion each time.

Joseph Vellella (Piasa, Ill./Southwestern), competing at the NCAA Division II Championships for the first time, placed 13th in the hammer throw with a top mark of 186 feet.  Vellella had three throws of almost similar length in the opening round, with marks of 185 even and 185-2 in the first two rounds of throws.

The ninth place mark after the third throw was of 191-3 by Brian Freed of South Dakota School of Mines.  The winning mark was 229-1, posted by Findlay's Justin Welch; he had the top mark in the country in the hammer throw heading into the national meet.

Missouri S&T will have two competitors in action on Friday in preliminary rounds in their respective events.  Adriel Hawkins (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) will compete in the 200-meter dash with his race slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. (Central time), while Jusean Archibald (Bridgeton, Mo./Trinity) runs in the 110-meter hurdles at 5:35 p.m.
