Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Slow starts plagued Missouri S&T's men's soccer team during its pre-season, but you wouldn't have known it by the way the Miners came out of the gate in Saturday's season opener against Southwest Baptist.
S&T put four goals on the scoreboard in the first 45 minutes of play and cruised to a
6-0 win over the Bearcats at the S&T Soccer Field in the second game of the GLVC-MIAA Classic. The six goals were the most scored by the Miners in a season opener since 1989, when S&T beat Valparaiso 7-1.
It took the Miners just over 15 minutes to get on the board, as
Carlos Gomez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Sra Del Recurerdo) got control of the ball on a pass from
E.J. Zembas (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest), worked his way through the defense and sent a shot from the top of the box past goalkeeper Austin Haywood.
Bryce Phillips (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood HS) then scored the first of his two goals on the night, taking a cross-field pass from
Ryan Lawhead (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and ripping a shot into the center of the net with 28:13 gone to make it 2-0.
S&T added two more goals in the final five minutes of the opening half, the first from David Zvdorak as he headed in a Lawhead cross at the 40:10 mark, then
Alex Reifschneider (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) ran down a long lead pass from
Neil Wiaranowski (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) and put it by Haywood with a little under two minutes to go in the half to give S&T its 4-0 halftime advantage.
Reifschneider scored again midway through the second half off an assist from
Kramer Hall (Liberty, Mo./Liberty HS), then Phillips scored his second goal off a back pass from
Brody Bouillon (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) to close the scoring the final two minutes of the contest.
S&T outshot the Bearcats 16-11 for the game, as
Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) turned away all six shots on goal to record the shutout – the third in a row for the Miners in a season opener.
Last year's opening day shutout came in a scoreless tie against Lindenwood, whom the Miners will face on the second day of the GLVC-MIAA Classic on Sunday. The Lions rallied for a 2-1 win over Missouri-St. Louis in the first game Saturday and will face S&T at 7:30 p.m. UMSL and Southwest Baptist will face off at 5 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field.
