Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's three-game winning streak came to a sudden halt Friday night as Bellarmine's Connor Brehm scored less than two minutes into the start of overtime, giving the Knights a
2-1 victory over the Miners at the S&T Soccer Field.
Brehm took an end line cross from John Cantrell and tapped in a one-timer just inside the near post to give the Knights the come-from-behind win in a contest that the Miners led for close to 74 minutes.
S&T got on the scoreboard first in the game's eighth minute, as
Alex Reifschneider (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) took a pass from
Gilberto Robayo (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish) and put a shot past Bellarmine goalkeeper Blake Hunter.
The Miners held onto that lead through the half as they outshot the Knights 7-3 in the opening half, but as the second half wore on, Bellarmine started creating more scoring opportunities which included two that got turned away by S&T goalkeeper
Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West).
First, Jackson stopped a penalty kick attempt by Matt Odem at the 62:10 mark, then turned away a shot by Brehm on a breakaway a little over three minutes later to keep the Miners in front.
However, with 8:28 to play, the Knights tied the score when Brycen Howard sent a long ball into the box that sailed over a pack of players going for the ball and bounced into the net to tie the game. The goal was the first allowed by the Miners to Bellarmine in over 560 minutes of play, dating back to the first half of the 2008 meeting between the teams.
The Miners had a couple of late opportunities to win it late, but Hunter stopped attempts by
E.J. Zembas (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) and Robayo in the final minutes to send the game into overtime.
S&T finished the game with a 13-10 advantage in shots, while the Knights (5-1-1, 3-1-1 GLVC) had two more corner kick attempts than the Miners. Jackson made four saves in goal for S&T (4-3, 3-2 GLVC), who will host McKendree Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
