Miners' late rally stuns Prairie Stars in overtime

9/22/2013 6:19:00 PM

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team is suddenly making it a habit of pulling out close games, as it won its third straight contest – all one-goal wins – Sunday afternoon with a 3-2, double overtime win at Illinois Springfield in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

This time, it took a stunning rally by the Miners to force overtime and then win it in the second extra period.  S&T trailed 2-0 with under 20 minutes to play, but scored twice after the Prairie Stars had scored their second goal with the latter coming with 49 seconds to go.  In the second overtime, Diego Robayo (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish) scored just past the halfway point of that period to give the Miners the victory.

The Prairie Stars took the lead in the contest late in the first half when Mark Czarny headed in a cross from Mike Severino, then added to their lead with just 19:39 to play when Nicolas Alonso del Moral scored on a one-timer past S&T goalkeeper Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West).

But just 22 seconds after the Alonso del Moral goal, Brian Seawright (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) got a through ball from Gilberto Robayo (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish) and scored into the far corner of the net past E.J. Kirn to get the Miners back to within a goal.

With time running out in regulation, the Miners got a free kick opportunity after a UIS foul and moments later, Diego Robayo (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish) sent a long cross ahead.  Carlos Gomez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Sra Del Recurerdo) was on the other end of the pass and one-timed a shot past Kirn with 49 seconds to play to knot the contest.

Jackson stopped a head ball try by Czarny a few seconds later and the game went into overtime, where each team had a scoring chance that was turned away by the opposing goalkeeper.  In the second overtime, the Prairie Stars got the first chance when another Czarny header was turned aside by Jackson.

The tide really began to turn in S&T's favor after that, as the Miners got the next three shots.  David Zdvorak (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill HS) hit the goal post three minutes into the period, then Gomez hit a shot over the net a minute later.  But about a minute after Gomez's attempt to win it, Diego Robayo (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish) got a pass in the middle of the box on a feed from Seawright and blasted it by Kirn to put the Miners in the victory column.

UIS had a 24-23 advantage in shots for the game and had nine shots on goal to S&T's eight.  Jackson made seven saves in goal for the Miners, who captured an overtime win for the second consecutive Sunday and improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the GLVC.  UIS fell to 3-3 and 2-2 in conference play.

The Miners return home Friday to host Bellarmine in a 7:30 p.m. game at the S&T Soccer Field.
