Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference action with an impressive
3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-18) win over 20
th ranked Indianapolis on Saturday. It is just the third time in the history of the program that the Miners knocked off a ranked team and only the second time against one ranked in Division II.
S&T (5-4, 1-0 GLVC) dominated the opening set by scoring the first nine points and wouldn't look back as it finished the frame with 16 kills against three errors in 41 chances (.317 percent).
Katie McDonald (Orland Park, Ill./Providence Catholic),
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) and
Holly Tarvin (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) led the charge combining for 11 kills. Just as impressive was the Miner defense finishing the set with two blocks and 21 digs while forcing the Greyhounds (4-5, 0-1 GLVC) into eight attack errors and held them to an attack percentage of .023.
The second set was tight early before S&T began to slowly pull away. The Miners held a 6-5 lead before
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) started a 7-1 run with a kill.
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) had a pair of kills in the run as well. S&T stretched its lead to seven at 17-10 on a kill from Moon, but UIndy answered scoring eight of the next 11 points to trim the margin to 21-18. The Miners wouldn't be denied though scoring four of the final seven points to take the set 25-21.
S&T had 15 kills in the set with McDonald, Moon, Tarvin and Wright chipping in with three each. The Miners had an attack percentage of .178 percent (15k/7e/45ta) and limited the 'Hounds to .023 percent (10k/9e/43ta).
UIndy scored the first two points of the third set before S&T scored seven of the next points to grab a 7-3 lead. It was a lead it wouldn't relinquish. The Greyhounds got as close as 11-10 on a kill from Hailey Brown, but no closer. Moon ignited a 5-1 run with a pair of kills. The lead eventually grew to eight points at 24-16 on a kill from Tarvin. UIndy staved off two match points, but not a third as McDonald and Moon teamed up for a block to end the match.
S&T finished the match with an attack percentage of .226 (46k/16e/133ta). Moon led the way with 11 kills while Tarvin contributed 10 to the attack. McDonald finished with eight while Wright and Haslag had seven each.
Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) finished with 39 assists, 14 digs and three kills. The Miners finished the match with 58 digs led by
Cydney Denning (San Antonio, Texas/Brandeis ) with 15.
Dana Shannon (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) had 10 digs as well. S&T finished the match with 11 team blocks.
The 'Hounds entered the match hitting .191 percent as a team, but were held to just .031 percent (29k/25e/131ta) for the match. Kenzie Bruggeman led the way with nine kills and Hailey Brown added seven. Megan Binkerd had 25 assists while Alyssa Garrett led the way with 15 digs.
The Miners are back in action on Sunday when they host Saint Joseph's College beginning at 1 p.m.
