Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – When Missouri S&T head coach
Gabe Hall took
David Zdvorak (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill HS) out for a rest late in the first half of Sunday's game with William Jewell, he told his junior forward that he was going to "get one" before the day was over -- get one as in scoring a goal. Sure enough…
Zdvorak scored 6:25 into overtime to give the Miners a
2-1 victory over the Cardinals at the S&T Soccer Field, putting them into the win column for the first time in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
In a game where the two teams each had control of play for long stretches but the Miners held a large advantage in shots attempted, it wasn't until the second half until the scoreless tie was broken.
Just over 15 minutes into the second half, William Jewell's Zane Christensen got control of a goal kick and sent a feed through the defense to Drew Dempsey for a breakaway and the first goal of the contest.
However, the Miners knotted things up almost immediately when they got a corner kick opportunity just over a minute later.
E.J. Zembas (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) ran down the serve that sailed over the pack of players in front of the net and sent it back to
Brian Seawright (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) in front, who redirected the ball into the net to tie the game 1:16 after the Cardinals' first goal.
William Jewell had to play the final 12-plus minutes of the contest a man down after a red card and the Miners had a number of good scoring chances in the final minutes of regulation play, including a shot along the end line from
Carlos Gomez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Sra Del Recurerdo) that hit the goal post after being deflected. Another good opportunity came in the final moments when
Alex Reifschneider (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) had an opening down the wing, but put his shot just outside of the near post.
In overtime, the Miners finally got the game-winner in transition, as
Bryce Phillips (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood HS) and Zdvorak got loose on a two-on-one and Zdvorak got an shot away from about 17 yards away that beat goalkeeper Shane Van Hooser for the winning tally.
The Miners outshot the Cardinals 29-13 for the game and had 11 shots on goal to seven for William Jewell.
James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) made five saves in goal for the Miners, who evened their overall record at 2-2 and went to 1-1 in GLVC play. The Cardinals dropped their second straight game and fell to 1-3 overall.
The Miners head to the road next week for a pair of GLVC tilts, beginning Friday when they face Southern Indiana in a 7:30 p.m. game in Evansville, Ind.
