Miners' Archibald breaks 24-year old standard, reaches NCAA mark

5/11/2013 7:49:00 PM

EMPORIA, Kan. – Missouri S&T Jusean Archibald (Bridgeton, Mo./Trinity) broke the school record in the 110-meter hurdles Saturday and made a strong NCAA provisional mark in the process as several of S&T's track & field competitors competed in the Sam Williams Twilight Qualifier at Emporia State University.

Archibald ran a 14.11 with a 3.8 meters per second wind at his back – just inside the legal mark of 4.0 to be able to qualify for an NCAA spot – and shattered Pat Short's long-standing school record in the event of 14.40 that had stood since 1989.

The time posted by Archibald nearly made the automatic qualifying time of 14.10 for the event.

Adriel Hawkins (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) ran a 21.55 in the 200-meters and Joseph Vellella (Piasa, Ill./Southwestern) had a mark of 172-8 in the hammer throw.  Alec Hackett (Buffalo, Mo./Fair Grove) competed in the pole vault but did not clear the bar on his three attempts.

Among the Lady Miner competitors in action Saturday, Rachel Ederle, who reached an NCAA Division II provisional mark in the pole vault on Friday in a meet at Missouri Southern, cleared 11-6¼ Saturday in the event as did Molly Clement.

Taylor Cipicchio went over the bar at 10-6¼ in the pole vault, while Mary Ann Bradshaw ran a 1:08.84 in the 400-meter hurdles.

The NCAA will announce the field for the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships this week; the meet is scheduled to begin May 23 in Pueblo, Colo.
