Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. –
John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) fired a four-hitter and Missouri S&T got key hits from
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) and
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) in the second game of Saturday 's doubleheader to come away with a
4-1 win and gain a split of its Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Maryville University.
The Saints took the opener
7-5 after the Miners had erased a five-run deficit in the contest.
Auble picked up his first win of the season as he held the Saints to three singles and a double while striking out six in a complete game effort. He also got some assistance from his defense, which turned a double play on the speedy Colby White in the fifth inning while nursing a two-run lead.
The Miners took the lead in the third inning after
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) opened the inning with a triple into the right field corner and scored moments later on a passed ball. Later in the frame, Lockett walked, moved to third on a double by
Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) and came home when Brown greeted reliever Scott Pennington with a first-pitch single.
Maryville cut the lead in half on Tyler Omlid's opposite field single that brought home Eric Keling, but the Miners got that run back in the fifth when Lockett doubled to the opposite field and came home on a hit by Brown with two outs to get the margin back to two.
S&T tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when
Michael Boxell (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) doubled off the glove of White in center and came home on a hit that followed by Lockett.
Lockett finished the nightcap with three hits, while Brown had two hits – both of which drove in runs – as S&T outhit the Saints 9-4.
In the first game, the Saints put a pair of runs on the board in each of the first two innings and added one in the fourth against starter
Chris Bowe (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) to take a 5-0 lead, but the Miners wiped that lead out in the span of two innings to get Bowe off the hook for the decision.
S&T got on the scoreboard in the fifth when
Sam Adams (Forsyth, Mo./Forsyth) reached on an error and scored on a triple by Boxell, then tied the game with a four-run outburst in the sixth.
Lockett led off the inning with a hit, then reached second when Nick Little's throw to second on Morrison's ground ball pulled Keling off the bag at second. Following a sacrifice bunt by Brown,
Colin Coan (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) singled to score Lockett and
Matt Robaska (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) belted a game-tying three-run homer to left center.
However, the Saints regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth after reliever
Mack Preston (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest) walked the first two hitters of the inning, leading to a sacrifice fly by Jared Green that put Maryville back on top. The Saints got their final run in the seventh and two Maryville relievers helped close out the win for Patrick Jacobs, who pitched into the eighth inning.
The Miners outhit the Saints 9-8 in the first game, with Brown and Robaska getting two hits apiece.
The Miners (9-15, 8-8 GLVC) and Saints (10-12, 9-5 GLVC) will face off in another doubleheader Sunday at noon to wrap up the weekend series.
