Panthers drop Miners back to .500 mark in GLVC play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri S&T fell back to the .500 mark in Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball play Wednesday as it dropped both games of its doubleheader at Drury University, losing by scores of 3-0 and 15-4 on a windy afternoon at Meador Park.

The Miners were shut out on four hits by Drury's Kevin Sweeney in the opener and only got one runner as far as third base in the opener, then averted a blanking in the nightcap when they scored four times in the top of the seventh inning.

S&T had a chance to grab an early lead in the opener when Michael Boxell (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) led off with a double off the wall in left.  But after being sacrificed to third, Boxell broke on contact on Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland)'s grounder to third and was tagged out in a rundown to cut the scoring chance short.

The Panthers, who lead the GLVC's West Division, were able to take advantage of an S&T mistake in the bottom half of the inning to move in front instead.  A dropped fly ball with two outs kept the inning alive and Caleb Cole followed with an RBI single that put Drury in the lead.

Drury added single runs in the second and fourth innings – the only innings besides the first in which it got a hit as four Miner pitchers held the Panthers to just three hits in the contest.  However, Sweeney was able to scatter the four hits he allowed as he pitched seven shutout innings against S&T for the second time in as many starts against it this year.

Chris Bowe (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) was tagged with the loss for S&T.

The Panthers scored again in the first inning of game two as they got hits from each of their first four hitters in the lineup, the last a two-run homer by Matt Borgschulte off Tom Laudadio (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) to take a 4-0 lead.  Drury added six more runs in the sixth before the Miners got on the scoreboard in the seventh.

S&T's seventh began with back-to-back hits from Lockett and Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla), then a wild pitch on a strikeout brought home Lockett with the first Miner run.  Colin Coan (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) reached on an infield hit and Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) blooped a single down the line in left to score Morrison.

Following a pitching change, Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) hit Ethan Mather's first pitch over Borgschulte's head in center for a two-run double to cut the Panther lead to 10-4.

Drury answered back in the bottom of the seventh by scoring five times – capped by Borgschulte's second homer of the game – to end the contest on an afternoon when the winds were blowing out to left at nearly 25 miles per hour..

The Panthers (26-10, 19-5 GLVC) outhit S&T 15-8 in the second game; Boxell had two hits for the Miners.

S&T, who fell to 13-21 overall and 12-12 in the GLVC, will begin a four-game series Saturday at Illinois Springfield with a noon doubleheader.
