Miners drop pair at Metrodome to #13 St. Cloud State

3/7/2013 5:38:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Missouri S&T struggled to get its offense going against a trio of St. Cloud State pitchers Thursday afternoon, as the 13th-ranked Huskies swept a doubleheader from the Miners at the Metrodome by scores of 9-3 and 6-0.

The Miners scored in only of the 14 innings in which they batted, which was a three-run fifth inning in the opener.  S&T had only eight hits in the twinbill, including only one against Husky starter Kyle Fischer in game two as it fell to 0-5 on the year.

St. Cloud State scored in each of the first five innings of game one, tallying single runs in the first two innings and two in the third and fourth to take a 6-0 lead.  The Miners cut the lead in half and knocked starter Scott Lieser out of the game in the process in the fifth, but the Huskies put three more on the board in the bottom half to regain their six-run advantage.

In the fifth, the Miners loaded the bases on a leadoff single by Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman), Kyle Rich (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) being hit by a pitch and a hit by Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS)Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) followed with an RBI single to put the Miners on the board, then Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) greeted reliever Chris Kubitz with a two-run through the right side of the infield, cutting the lead to 6-3.

However, Kubitz retired the final nine S&T hitters after the Morrison hit – six by strikeout – to save the victory for Lieser.

The Huskies outhit the Miners 13-7 in the opener, with Morrison getting two of S&T's seven hits.  Starting pitcher Chris Bowe (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) was tagged with the loss.

In the nightcap, the Miners and Huskies were scoreless into the fifth inning, with S&T starter Nolan Korn (Cedar Hill, Mo./Northwest) being helped with some spectacular defense along the way.  However, St. Cloud State got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Eric Loxtercamp led off with a walk and scored on a wild pitch with two outs.

The Miners had what turned out to be their best scoring chance in the bottom of that inning after Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch with one out.  A pop out and a fly out that followed ended that opportunity.

St. Cloud State tacked on three more runs in the seventh and added two in the eighth against the S&T bullpen for the final margin.

Wobbe had the only Miner hit with an infield single in the first inning.  Korn allowed only three hits and one run in the six innings he worked.

The Miners will play another doubleheader at the Metrodome Friday, facing Concordia-St. Paul starting at 7 a.m.
