ROLLA, Mo. -- The Missouri S&T Lady Miners will meet the Lewis Flyers for the fourth straight year in the conference tournament when the two teams square off on Friday evening in the quarterfinals beginning at 6 p.m.
S&T broke a six-game losing streak to Lewis with a 69-62 win in Rolla back on Jan. 5. The Flyers held a 60-59 lead after a pair of free throws by Labrenthia Murdock with 3:43 to play.
Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) hit back-to-back 3-pointers igniting a 10-0 run to give S&T its biggest lead of the contest.
Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) and
Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) combined to go 4 for 5 at the foul line in the closing seconds to secure the win. The Lady Miners had four players in double figures that game led by Knar and
Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) with 15 points apiece. Parks and
Senait McLeod (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) dropped in 11 each. S&T turned the ball over a season-low nine times in the contest.
Lewis was led in scoring by Murdock and Alexus Grayer with 13 points apiece while Sam Rinehart added 11 to the mix.
The Flyers (21-5) enter Friday's contest as the top seed in the tournament and shared the East Division title with Kentucky Wesleyan. Lewis is led in scoring by Jess Reinhart with 14.8 per game. Murdock is averaging 11.5 per contest while Sam Rinehart is averaging 11.2 ppg. The Flyers are one of the top scoring teams in the GLVC averaging 72.0 points per game while allowing 63.9 a contest. They're shooting 43.4 percent as a team, 35.1 percent from three and 71 percent at the foul line. Lewis is outrebounding its opposition by 4.3 rebounds per game. The Flyers are currently riding a five-game winning streak.
The Lady Miners advanced to the quarterfinal with a 60-47 win over Missouri-St. Louis at home on Sunday. S&T fell behind 14-3 to start the game, but eventually tied it up at 28-28 on an old fashioned three-point play by Knar. The Tritons went into the break with a 31-28 lead on a banked in three by Jessica Zavoral right before the buzzer. S&T scored 10 of the first 16 points to start the second half and took its first lead of the game on a pair of free throws by
Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) with 15:16 left in the contest. UMSL regained the lead on a basket by Devonna Smith after a turnover with 13:11 to play. The Lady Miners regained the lead on a pair of free throws by
Erica Askew (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) sparking a 14-0 run. The S&T defense did its part during the run holding the Tritons scoreless for over 10 minutes. The Lady Miners led by as many as 16 points in the contest. Parks led the way with 23 points while Knar dropped home 15.
Parks leads the team in scoring and rebounding averaging 14.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. She's only the second player in school history to surpass the 1,300 point and 700 rebound marks.Parks is second in the GLVC in field goal percentage (53.4 percent), fifth in rebounding and 10th in scoring.
Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) is averaging 9.1 points per game and is tied for eighth in the league in 3-point FGs made (2.0) and 10th in 3-point FG percentage (38.3 percent).
Kyesha Hall (Dodson, La./) is averaging 7.6 points per game and ranks fourth in the GLVC in steals with 2.3 per game and is 15th in assists with 3.0 per contest.
