Box Score 2 ROLLA, Mo. – Following a ragged first inning on the mound,
Nolan Korn (Cedar Hill, Mo./Northwest) took command as the game progressed to strike out a career-high 10 batters to lead Missouri S&T to a
7-2 victory over Missouri-St. Louis in the second game of Friday's doubleheader. The Tritons rallied for a
2-1 win in game one of the Great Lakes Valley Conference twinbill at the S&T Baseball Field.
Korn allowed two first inning runs to the Tritons, runs that scored on back-to-back doubles by Charlie Mohr and Trevor Nathanson. But after the Miners scored three times in the bottom half of the inning, Korn took command of the contest on the mound, allowing only three hits, walking one and reaching his career high in strikeouts over six scoreless innings that followed.
S&T grabbed the lead with three unearned runs in the bottom of the first, which began with walks to
Kyle Rich (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) and
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS).
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) tried to bunt the runners over, but the throw to third was dropped to load the bases.
Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) drove in the first run with a ground out and
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
Colin Coan (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./South St. Paul) then got the Miners' only hit of the first inning, a single through the hole into left, to score Lockett with the go-ahead run.
The Miners added to their lead in the fourth after Coan walked to begin the inning and
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) doubled. A wild pitch by UMSL reliever Brendyn Dabrowski brought home Coan and another wild delivery later in the frame scored Ulrich.
In the sixth, the Miners pushed two more runs across when Morrison singled home a pair.
The Miners outhit the Tritons 7-5 in the nightcap, with Lockett getting two hits and Morrison finishing with three runs batted in.
S&T had missed a chance at getting on the scoreboard in the first inning of game one after loading the bases with one out. The Miners appeared to have scored a run when Brown beat the throw to first on a double play ball, but an interference call at second led to Brown being called out and the run was wiped off the board as a result.
The Miners did grab the lead when Lockett doubled into the gap in left center to score Rich with two outs in the third. However, S&T was unable to get another run to second until the eighth inning after the Lockett double and the Tritons were able to tie the contest in the sixth on Drew Standefer's inside-the-park home run.
UMSL nearly got the go-ahead run across the plate in the eighth after loading the bases with two outs, but Coan and S&T starting pitcher
Chris Bowe (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) cut down Nathanson at the plate when he tried to score when the ball got away from Coan.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Miners had their own scoring chance when
Michael Boxell (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch, but Kyle Renaud, who entered the game for the Tritons after the walk to Boxell, struck out the side to get UMSL out of the inning.
Justin Lois greeted Miner reliever
Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) with a double down the line in left to open the ninth and he scored the go-ahead run moments later on Tyler Bunge's sacrifice fly. Renaud got a pair of strikeouts in the ninth and got the final out after issuing a two-out walk to pick up the win.
The Miners had only four hits in the opener – two from Lockett – as the Tritons outhit S&T 12-4. Bowe pitched the first eight innings and scattered 11 hits.
S&T, who moved to 8-10 overall and 7-3 in the GLVC with Friday's split, will take on the Tritons (7-9, 4-4 GLVC) in another doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.
