Lady Miners fall to Saints at the buzzer

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners fell on a shot at the buzzer to Maryville 56-54 on Thursday evening in Rolla. S&T had a chance to play for the game's final shot, but turned it over with 0:04 left and the Saints raced the length of the floor and scored the game-winner as Shelby Miller's layup rimmed home as the buzzer sounded.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair that saw 10 ties and four lead changes. Maryville (12-8, 8-4 GLVC) led by as many as six at 54-48 on a layup by Kate Childs with 4:13 left in the contest. The Lady Miners (12-8, 8-4) battled back with six straight of their own to tie the game on a putback by Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) with 0:46 left. S&T missed two free throws during that run as well which proved to be costly. Abby Duethman tried to give the Saints the lead back with a three from the left corner but it rimmed out and Kyesha Hall (Dodson, La./) grabbed the rebound with 0:32 remaining.

S&T took a timeout to set up the final play, but the offense wasn't able to get in a flow. With the clock winding down Parks tried to make a move but had the ball knocked away from her. Childs picked up the loose ball and raced down court. She hit found Miller who layed it up and in to give Maryville the win.

The Saints got off to a fast start in this one getting out to an 18-7 lead with 11:25 to play in the opening half. The Lady Miners battled back to within 29-28 on a layup by Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) with 2:17 left. The Saints pushed the lead to 31-28 on a layup by Brittnye McSparron on the next possession.

A pair of free throws by Parks cut the margin to one at the break.

S&T shot 38.5 percent (20 for 52) but was just 3 of 14 from beyond the arc and 11 for 17 at the foul line. It outrebounded Maryville by a 41 to 30 margin, but turned it over 18 times compared to just 11 turnovers for the Saints. Parks led the way with 14 points while Senait McLeod (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) added 11. Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) finished with nine points. Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) pulled down 11 rebounds.

Maryville shot 37.1 percent (23 of 62) from the floor, was 4 for 19 from three (21 percent) and 6 of 6 at the charity stripe. Childs led three Saints in double figures with 17. Miller dropped in 16 while McSparron added 11.

The Lady Miners are back at home on Saturday when they host Missouri-St. Louis beginning at 1 p.m.
