Box Score (Quincy, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners earned its first win at Quincy since February 24, 2007 rallying from a 14-point first half deficit to win
59-54 on Saturday afternoon at Pepsi Arena.
Quincy led early 12-2, but the Lady Miners closed to within 18-13 an old-fashioned 3-point play by
Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) with 6:05 left in the opening half. The Lady Hawks answered scoring 11 of the next 13 points to take their biggest lead of the game at 29-15 on 3-pointer by Kelly Buresh with 1:39 left in the half.
S&T began to chip away at the lead scoring the final four points of the half getting layups form
Kyesha Hall (Dodson, La./) and
Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton).
In the first half both sides struggled to shoot the ball as S&T (14-9, 10-5 GLVC) scored only 19 points and was held to just 29 percent shooting (8 for 28) from the field. The Lady Hawks (13-10, 11-4 GLVC) weren't much better converting on just 9 of its 30 attempts (30 percent). The difference was the foul line where Quincy was 9 for 10 and S&T was 3 of 3 and behind the three-point line with the Lady Hawks knocking down a pair of three's.
Those four points at the end of the first half proved to be big as the Lady Miners stretched their run to 17-0 by scoring the first 13 points of the second half. S&T took its first lead of the game on a basket by
Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) three minutes into the second half.
The Lady Miners would eventually push their lead to 46-39 on a 3-pointer by
Erica Askew (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) with 9:20 left in the contest. S&T continued to hold the Hawks at arm's length until Felisha Loggins hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 52-all with less than four minutes to play.
The Lady Miners regained the lead on a pair of free throws by Parks with 3:31 to play. Quincy tied the game on a layup by Maggie Cunningham with 1:29 to go. Heil hit a 3-pointer with 1:05 to play putting S&T ahead for good at 57-54. The Lady Miners got a stop on the defensive end as
Taylor Jensen (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) got a steal and was fouled with under 0:30 left. She would hit both free throws to seal the game.
S&T outscored Quincy 40-25 in the second half and shot 56 percent (14 of 25) from the floor, 3 for 7 from three and was 9 of 12 from the charity stripe. The Lady Miners finished the game shooting 41.5 percent (21 for 51) from the floor and was led in scoring by Hall with 12 points and Heil dropped in 10.
The Lady Hawks shot just 26 percent (7 of 27) in the second half from the floor and finished the game shooting 28 percent (16 for 57). They stayed in the game by going 10 for 13 at the foul line. Quincy was led in scoring by Buresh with 17 points while Loggins dropped in 11.
S&T is back at home next Thursday when it plays host to Rockhurst beginning at 5:30 p.m.
