ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's basketball teams will head to the road for its longest road trip in Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend, as the Miners and Lady Miners will play doubleheaders Thursday and Saturday in the state of Indiana.
The Miners and Lady Miners will face Saint Joseph's College Thursday in Rensselaer, Ind., and in a departure from the norm, the men's game will be played first at 5:30 p.m., and the women's contest follows at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, S&T will face the University of Indianapolis – whose teams are both ranked among the top seven in this week's national polls – in a twinbill that will start with the women's contest at noon Central time. The men's game will follow at 2:15 p.m. Central.
Men's game: Thursday vs. Saint Joseph's
The Miners are looking to garner their first win in GLVC play against a Puma team that split a pair of two-point decisions in its opening weekend of conference action. The Miners also enter the contest looking to snap a two-game losing streak after falling to Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis at home last weekend to fall to 4-6 on the year.
Mudi Eruteya has recorded three consecutive double-doubles for the Miners, the latest a 19-point, 12-rebound effort in Saturday's game with Lewis, and currently leads the Miners in scoring with an average of 14 points per game. Eruteya also comes into play Thursday as the GLVC's leading rebounder with 9.1 per game and leads the team in assists with 29.
Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East) has also scored in double figures in four of his last five games to up his average to 10.4 points a contest, while Michael Nesbitt (Evansville, Ind./LaLumiere School) is shooting 54 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range; he shares the team lead in three-pointers made with 13.
Saint Joseph's brings a 3-6 mark into Thursday's game after winning by two at Rockhurst and falling by a basket at William Jewell last week. The Pumas' top scorer has been Dayvon Sloan, who is sixth in the GLVC in scoring with an average of 16.7 points per game and has been in double figures in eight consecutive games.
Damon Ellison, who hit the game-winning basket at Rockhurst, is scoring 13.3 points per game and leads the Pumas with 6.3 rebounds per outing, while Michael Lipton and Corey Clifton have 24 assists each to lead Saint Joseph's in that category.
Women's game: Lady Miners vs. Saint Joseph's
The Lady Miners will seek to continue their winning ways in GLVC play in the late game Thursday against a Saint Joseph's team that has won just once in 10 outings this year. Missouri S&T improved to 3-0 in the GLVC and 7-4 overall after knocking off Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis at home over the weekend, while the Pumas dropped contests at Rockhurst and William Jewell.
Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) continues to lead the Lady Miners in scoring with an average of 15.5 points per game, good for fourth in the GLVC, while also leading S&T in rebounding with 8.1 a game (seventh in the GLVC) and in field goal percentage at 54.5 percent, which is fourth-best in the league.
Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) has a team-high 26 three-point baskets, which is tied for fourth in the conference, as she is scoring 10.5 points per game, while Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) has averaged 14.7 points in S&T's three GLVC contests and has boosted her seasonal scoring average to 9.5 per game.
A youthful Saint Joseph's team, one which the bulk of it consists of freshmen and sophomores, has averaged only 59 points per game during the first 10 contests of the season and is shooting below 35 percent from the field. The Pumas have made 57 three-point baskets, which is about one more per game than the Lady Miners and they rank in the middle of the pack in treys per game.
Lexy Carson is leading the Pumas in scoring with an average of 14.4 points per game, while Kiki Wilson is averaging 13.4 a contest and leads Saint Joseph's in assists with 38.
Saturday's opponent: Indianapolis
Missouri S&T will square off Saturday with a pair of Greyhound squads that rank among the top teams in NCAA Division II, according to the most recent national polls released Tuesday. The UIndy women, at 9-1, are ranked fifth in the latest WBCA/USA Today poll while the undefeated Greyhound men (10-0) are ranked seventh this week in the NABC's poll.
UIndy's women have lost only to the nation's top-ranked team, Ashland, in accumulating its 9-1 record and No. 5 ranking. The Greyhounds have built their success on defense, where they are holding opponents to just 29 percent shooting overall and 23.3 percent from three-point range; the former mark leads NCAA Division II.
Katy McIntosh leads the Greyhounds in scoring with a GLVC-best average of 16.9 points per game, while Kristin Turner is also in double figures at 13.9 points a contest. Kirsten Gliesmann, a transfer from Wright State, is averaging 8.4 points and a team-best 8.4 rebounds per game.
Meanwhile, UIndy's men have outscored their opponents by just over 23 points per game in winning its first 10 games of the season; it comes into play this week as one of six remaining undefeated teams in NCAA Division II.
Reece Cheatham is one of three double figure scorers for the Greyhounds with his average of 16.6 points per game that currently ranks seventh in the GLVC. Cheatham is also shooting 40.5 percent from three-point range – UIndy shoots nearly 37 percent as a team – while James Hollowell is scoring 14.4 points a game and Leland Brown is posting 11.7 points a contest.
Hollowell, a transfer from Eastern Illinois, leads UIndy on the boards with 7.1 per game. As a team, the Greyhounds rank fifth in the nation in field goal percentage at 52.2 percent and own the second-best assist-to-turnover ratio in Division II of 1.57-to-1.
Both Indianapolis teams will host Drury Thursday before the S&T squads make their visit to Nicoson Hall Saturday afternoon.
