Box Score (Kansas City, Mo.) – The offensive struggles continued for the Missouri S&T Lady Miners as it was held in the 30s for the second straight game in a
50-34 loss at Rockhurst on Thursday. It was the fewest points scored in a game for a Lady Miner squad since a 61-23 loss at Truman State on January 23, 2002.
S&T (11-7, 7-3 GLVC) opened the game scoring five of the first six points but couldn't maintain it. Rockhurst (6-12, 3-7 GLVC) countered with four straight points tying the game on a layup by MaKayla Grahn.
Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) put the Lady Miners back up momentarily with a basket at the 14:47 mark. It was S&T's last lead of the night as the Hawks proceeded to go on a 16-2 run to build a 21-9 advantage with 7:47 to play in the half.
The Lady Miners would cut the lead under double digits a couple of times, but were unable to get closer than nine points. Rockhurst led by as many as 17 points at 32-15 on a Grahn 3-pointer with less than two minutes to play in the half. S&T scored the last three points of the stanza to cut the margin to 18 at the break.
The Lady Miners were led in scoring by Parks with nine and
Taylor Jensen (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) with three. S&T shot just 35 percent in the frame, was 0 for 4 from three and 4 of 11 at the foul line. It turned it over 10 times resulting in 16 points for Rockhurst.
The Hawks were led in scoring by Grahn with seven while Kara McFarland and Becky Squires dropped home six and five points respectively. Rockhurst outrebounded the Lady Miners 23-14 in the half.
The two sides opened the second 20 minutes trading baskets as the Hawks continued to hold their double digit lead. S&T got as close as 10 points with four minutes left on a pair of free throws by Parks, but on the ensuing possession Melanie Siscos hit a 3-pointer from the far wing to push the lead back to 13 points.
McFarland added three free throws with 1:42 left as neither side would score the rest of the way.
The Lady Miners were just 6 of 19 (32 percent) from the floor, 1 for 4 from beyond the 3-point line and converted on 3 of their 4 free throws. Hall scored nine points in the second while Parks dropped home five.
S&T finished the game shooting 33.3 percent (13 for 39) from the field, 1 of 8 from three and 7 for 15 at the charity stripe. Parks led the way with 14 points while Hall added 11. The Lady Miners turned it over 17 times resulting in 21 points for Rockhurst.
The Hawks shot only 32 percent in the 2
nd half and finished the game shooting 36 percent (18 for 50). They were 4 of 10 from three and 10 for 14 at the foul line. McFarland led all scorers with 15 points while Siscos and Grahn dropped home seven each. Rockhurst won the battle of the boards 36-29.
S&T returns home to face William Jewell on Saturday afternoon beginning at 3 p.m.
