ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's basketball journey through the Great Lakes Valley Conference takes the teams to St. Louis this weekend, as the Miners and Lady Miners take on the conference's two members from that city in doubleheaders Thursday and Saturday.
S&T will face the University of Missouri-St. Louis in a twinbill Thursday beginning with the women's game at 5:30 p.m.; the men's game will follow at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Miners and Lady Miners will take on Maryville University as the women's game tips off at 1 p.m. and the men's game is scheduled for a 3:15 p.m. start.
These are the first two games of a three-game road swing for Missouri S&T, who will wrap up the stretch at Rockhurst on Jan. 31 before hosting William Jewell on Feb. 2.
Women's Game: Lady Miners vs. Missouri-St. Louis
The Lady Miners enter play this weekend in a tie for the lead in the GLVC West Division with Quincy – whom S&T dispatched of last Thursday in Rolla – and have won five of their last six games overall. The recent run by the Lady Miners has been fueled by improved shooting, as S&T has shot 47.5 percent (153-of-322) during that stretch, including three games at 50 percent or better.
Missouri S&T shot 60.9 percent from the floor in the win over Quincy, then connected on 52 percent in Saturday's 76-63 victory over Illinois Springfield that improved it to 10-5 overall and 6-1 in GLVC play.
Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) continues to rank among the leaders in the GLVC in several categories, including a fifth-place ranking in the league's scoring column at 16.3 points per game. Parks also leads the conference in field goal percentage at 57.6 percent – a mark that ranks ninth in NCAA Division II – and tied for fourth in rebounding at 8.3 per outing.
Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein), who also averages 11.2 points per game, is 11
th nationally in three-point percentage at 44.4 percent and is second in the GLVC with 40 three-point baskets.
The Lady Miners will be facing a Missouri-St. Louis team that has finished below .500 for each of the past six years, but comes into the game with a four-game winning streak that has improved its records to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in the GLVC. The Tritons won a tough defensive battle Saturday with William Jewell in Liberty, Mo., by a count of 46-41 as they held the Cardinals to 30.9 percent shooting.
UMSL's last four opponents have shot 40 percent or less from the field and have made only 11 of their last 50 three-point attempts.
The Tritons have two players averaging in double figures in the scoring column in Devonna Smith at 13.3 points per game and Hazaria Washington at 11.7 a contest. Smith averages 9.1 rebounds a game -- third in the GLVC -- and Washington is also tied with Parks for fourth in the league in rebounding with 8.3 a game and as a team, UMSL leads the conference with 15.4 offensive rebounds per contest.
Men's Game: Miners vs. Missouri-St. Louis
The Miners got their first GLVC victory of the season on Saturday by downing Illinois Springfield 69-60 and now head on the road for three straight games against opponents they defeated away from home a year ago.
Mudi Eruteya came within one assist of recording the first triple-double in school history Saturday, finishing with 14 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists in the win over UIS. He was one of four Miners in double figures in the win, joining
Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East) with 14 points and Zach Ellis with 13 in the win.
Eruteya leads the Miners in scoring with an average of 13.9 points per contest and leads the conference in rebounding with 8.9 per game. He has five double-doubles this year, which is tied for second in the conference with McKendree's John Steppe and is one in back of Kentucky Wesleyan's Dazmond Starke's six.
Khan is also averaging in double figures at 10.7 points a game, while Ellis has scored in double figures in each of his last three outings.
Missouri-St. Louis, the defending champion in the GLVC West Division, is 10-5 overall and 3-4 in the GLVC coming into play Thursday after stumbling 79-71 Saturday at William Jewell. The Tritons were outscored 33-12 at the free throw line by the Cardinals in the loss that snapped their three-game winning streak.
Three players are averaging in double figures for the Tritons, led by Joshua McCoy's 16.8 points per game that ranks seventh in the GLVC. Darian Cartharn is scoring 13.7 points a game and has connected a team-high 35 times from three-point range, while Charlie Woods is averaging 10.3 points and a team-best 6.1 rebounds a game.
UMSL is the top free throw shooting team in NCAA Division II at 80.4 percent, with Michael Weber at second nationally at 94.5 percent, but ranks in the middle of the pack in its shooting from the field (43.8 percent) and three-point range (34.7 percent) in the GLVC.
Saturday's Opponent: Maryville
Missouri S&T will follow its trip to UMSL with a Saturday doubleheader at Maryville, as the women will face the defending GLVC Tournament champions and the men will take on a Saint team that is currently tied for the lead in the GLVC West with Drury – whom it hosts Thursday prior to the Miners' visit.
Maryville's women entered the season ranked in the Top 25 nationally, but comes into the week at 8-7 overall and 4-3 in conference play. The Saints bounced back from a loss at William Jewell last Thursday to knock off Rockhurst 72-58 Saturday for their third win in the last four games.
Senior forward Abby Duethman, who just broke the all-time scoring record at Maryville with 1,371 career points, leads the Saints and GLVC in scoring with her average of 17.2 points per contest. She is also the top rebounder in the conference with 9.6 a game and has a team-high 24 steals.
Brittnye McSparron, a transfer from Drake, is scoring 11.5 points a game and sophomore guard Shelby Miller is scoring 10 points a game and has a team-high 27 three-point baskets heading into Thursday's home contest with Drury.
The men's team at Maryville will take a 15-4 overall mark and 5-2 conference record into action this week; it has already recorded its highest win total as a member of NCAA Division II since reclassifying five years ago.
The Saints have won four straight games – including a win over then-No. 4 Bellarmine – and have three players averaging in double figures, led by Asa Toney with an average of 15.9 points per game. Armon Provo is scoring 12.8 points a contest and Gerald Shaw is averaging 10.8 a game.
Trae Pemberton, who is just short of the double figure plateau at 9.3 a game, is second in the GLVC in three-point shooting at 49.1 percent. The four aforementioned players have a combined 114 of Maryville's 146 three-point baskets (78.1 percent) on the year. As a team, the Saints are shooting 47.4 percent from the field.
