Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – A solid defensive effort coupled with two timely shots allowed MissourI S&T to get back to the .500 mark in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Sunday afternoon, as the Miners took a 2-0 decision from Maryville University at the S&T Soccer Field.

After a scoreless first half, the Miners took the lead 9:45 into the second half when Carlos Gomez (Madrid, Spain/Nuestra Sra Del Recurerdo)'s free kick on goal was stopped by Saint goalkeeper James Hohenstein, but the rebound went right out to Adam Stensland (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and he proceeded to hammer the rebound past Hohenstein to break the deadlock.

The Miners added to their lead with just over 17 minutes remaining on another free kick, as Peter Vaccaro (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) got a head on the serve by Spencer Brinkmeyer (Kansas City, Mo./Oak Park) and got it by Hohenstein.

From that point, the Miner defense held firm to preserve the team's fifth shutout of the season.  Maryville had 12 shots in the game, but only four of them on goal.  Junior goalkeeper Matt Jackson (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) saved all four on goal, including a pair near the net just seconds apart with under seven minutes to go.

Missouri S&T finished the afternoon with 16 shots and had five corner kick opportunities to one for the Saints (2-9, 2-6 GLVC).

The Miners, who moved to 5-4-1 overall and 4-4 in the GLVC with Sunday's win, will face conference newcomer McKendree University Friday in Lebanon, Ill., at 7:30 p.m.
