(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miners won the second game of its doubleheader in dramatic fashion scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to defeat Missouri-St. Louis 6-5 on Saturday. The Miners won the first game 8-6 and with that win clinched the program's first postseason berth since 1997. It also marks S&T's first appearance in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament.
The Miners (26-15, 19-7 GLVC) fell behind early in the opener as Kenny Bechaud hit a solo home run to left field with two outs in the opening inning. S&T responded in the home half of the first scoring six runs on five hits and took advantage of three errors by the Tritons (14-28, 9-19 GLVC). Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS) and Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) each doubled in the frame.
UMSL responded with four runs in the second. An error allowed two runs to score then Taylor Holman lined a two-out two-run double off the left field fence for the next two runs. The Tritons tied it in the fifth on a two-out RBI single off the bat of Greg Dambach scoring Bechaud.
The Miners regained the lead in the bottom of the frame as Grant Brasher (Bridgeton, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) singled to center driving in Ben Pieper (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) from second. S&T added to its lead in the sixth with some small ball. Wobbe led off the inning with a single and moved to second on McCord's sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch moved him to third and then he scored on a passed ball.
UMSL threatened in the eighth putting two runners on with one out. Nolan Korn (Cedar Hill, Mo./Northwest) came in to relieve John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South). A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third before Korn got the final out on a fly ball to center.
The Tritons again threatened in the ninth getting a lead-off single before Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) slammed the door shut. He struck out Bechaud looking, got Brian McCulloch to fly out to left and Spencer Ammons to ground out to third to end the game.
Zack Gronek (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) improved to 8-1 on the year. He pitched five innings allowing six runs, three earned, on eight hits. He struck out five and walked one. Auble came on in the sixth and pitched 2.1 allowing a walk and a hit by pitch. Korn pitched 0.2 of an inning and Dunsford pitched the ninth to earn his fifth save.
Wobbe and Nick Burke (Good Hope, Ill./West Prairie HS) had four of the Miners 10 hits. Brasher drove in two runs while Pieper scored two.
In the night cap Missouri-St. Louis took the early lead scoring four times in the second. The Tritons had three hits in the frame and capitalized on two S&T errors.
The Miners cut the lead in half with single runs in the third and fourth. Andy Hall (Rolla, Mo./Rolla HS) drove in Wobbe with the first run with a single through the right side. S&T got back-to-back hits to start the fourth. Zach Carter (Perkins, Okla./Perkins-Tryon) moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. A fielding error by Justin Lois allowed the second run to score.
UMSL extended its lead in the sixth as Joel Ayala-Diaz hit a solo homer to left with two outs.
The Miners trimmed the lead to one in the bottom of the frame. With one out Lee Voth-Gaeddert (Hesston, Kan./Hesston HS) singled down the left field. Carter drove him in with his fourth round tripper of the year.
With one out in the seventh Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) walked Ammons. Korn then came in and walked Bechaud on four pitches before getting McCulloch to ground into an inning ending double play.
S&T's rally in the bottom of the frame started with Wobbe singling down the left field line. McCord sacrificed him over to second. Drew Davenport (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) came off the bench and delivered a pinch hit single to left putting runners on the corner. A pop-up to short was the second out. With Pieper batting Bechaud threw a wild pitch allowing Wobbe to score the tying run and Davenport advanced to second. Pieper then walked on four pitches as the last one got away from Ayala-Diaz allowing Davenport to move to third. Voth-Gaeddert won the game lining a 1-0 pitch just inside the third base line for a walk-off single scoring Davenport with the game winner.
Voth-Gaeddert finished with three hits in the second game while Carter had two.
Robertson went the first 6.1 allowing five runs, two earned, on six hits. He walked four and hit two batters to go along with a pair of strike outs. Korn improved to 5-1 pitching the final 0.2 allowing no runs and no hits with the walk.
