(Rolla, Mo.) – For the third straight game and fourth in its last five the Missouri S&T Lady Miners needed more than the allotted time in regulation to pull out a decision. S&T outscored Bellarmine 9-4 in the extra period to defeat the Knights 62-57 on Sunday afternoon in Rolla.
The Lady Miners remained in a first place tie with Drury in the West Division as the Lady Panthers defeated Northern Kentucky 54-47 on Sunday.
S&T (17-5, 11-3 GLVC) matched its season-high with 68 field goal attempts but made only 23 of them as it shot 33.8 percent from the floor. Thankfully for the Lady Miners they were able to dominate the glass outrebounding the Knights (11-11, 6-8 GLVC) by a 63-to-32 margin. 30 of those rebounds came on the offensive end. The 63 rebounds were three shy of the all-time record of 66 set against Missouri-St. Louis on January 10, 1996.
Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City) had a career-high 23 rebounds while Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) grabbed 12 boards and Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) finished with 10. Washington's total was four off the record set by Dallas Kirk of 27 against Missouri Southern on November 29, 1978.
S&T's defense helped keep them in the game especially in the second half and overtime as it held Bellarmine to just 8-for-26 (31 percent) shooting in the final 25 minutes. The Knights shot just 32.7 percent for the game.
The Lady Miners got off to a great behind the play of Parks and Washington who scored the first nine points of the game as S&T led 9-3 just over six minutes into the contest.
Bellarmine began to take control over the next four minutes hitting a trio of three's during a 13-0 run which saw it take a 16-9 advantage.
The Lady Miners were held to just two points in a six minute stretch before Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) snapped the spell with a three to make it 16-14 at the 7:25 mark.
The Knights continued to push eventually building an eight point lead on two different occasions late in the half. S&T closed to within five on two different occasions and had a chance to be down by that margin at the break. Therese Montano's two free throws with less than a second left gave Bellarmine a 30-23 advantage at the break.
S&T was just 8-for-29 (28 percent) from the floor in the stanza and was even worse at the line making only 42 percent (5-of-12). Washington had seven points and 11 rebounds at the break while Parks chipped in with six points and five rebounds.
Montano led all scorers with 11 points. Kylee Hamilton dropped in six while Lauren Jones and Allison Matheis had five each.
The Lady Miners opened the second half strong scoring eight of the first 10 points to trim the Knights lead to 32-31 more than five minutes in. The two sides traded baskets over the next seven minutes with Bellarmine leading by no more than four points.
Chelsea Stangel (Manitowoc, Wisc./Roncalli ) gave S&T its first lead since early in the ball game scoring five straight points including a three with less than eight minutes to play. Her play sparked a 12-2 run for S&T as she had eight in the run.
The Lady Miners led 48-42 with 6:18 to play, but the Knights countered with seven straight to regain the lead at 49-48 with 4:43 to play. D'Naya Mims (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy) put S&T back up by a point with a layup at the 3:28 mark.
Bellarmine again refused to yield getting buckets from Hamilton and Montano to make it 53-50 with more than two minutes to play.
Meyer scored on a put back with 1:48 left to make it 53-52 and Parks tied the game 0:44 later when she connected on 1-of-2 at the foul line. Washington grabbed the rebound but S&T turned it over with 0:49 left.
The Knights turned it right back over though as Washington came up with a steal with 0:31 left and gave the Lady Miners a chance to hold for the final shot. That chance never came as they turned it over with 0:02 left.
Kemp dominated in the overtime scoring seven of the nine points. She scored the first points of the extra frame to give S&T a 55-53 lead 0:46 in. Jalissa Chatlos tied the game with a jumper 0:35 later.
Washington gave the Lady Miners the lead for good with a layup at the 2:41 mark.
Bellarmine had a chance to tie the game again but Chatlos made just 1-of-2 at the line to keep it a one point advantage.
Kemp gave S&T a 59-56 lead hitting a pair of free throws with 2:18 left. Neither side scored for a nearly 1:30 before Montano made 1-of-2 at the stripe to make it 59-57 with 0:42 remaining.
Kemp delivered the dagger hitting a three from the wing right in front of the Lady Miner bench with 0:18 left.
Kemp finished the game with 14 points while Parks had 13 to go along with her 12 rebounds. Stangel delivered 11 of the bench.
Montano and Hamilton had 16 and 15 points respectively. Lauren Jones, Bellarmine's leading scorer at 19.3 points, was held to just nine.
S&T returns to action next Thursday night traveling to St. Louis, Mo., to take on Maryville University at 5:15 p.m.
