Lady Miners break away from Northern Kentucky for 67-60 Double OT win

(Rolla, Mo.) – Its not how many three's you make in a game, but when you make them. For the Missouri S&T Lady Miners it made just three three's all night but two of those came in the second overtime as it was able to finally break free and defeat Northern Kentucky 67-60 on Friday night in Rolla.

For the Lady Miners (16-5, 10-3 GLVC) it was their third overtime game in their last four contests. With the win S&T moved back into a first place tie with Drury in the GLVC West Division as the Lady Panthers fell 95-80 to Indianapolis at home on Friday evening.

The game didn't get off to a hot start for either side as the Lady Miners opened the game making only 1-of-10 from the floor. The Norse (14-7, 8-5 GLVC) weren't much better shooting only 33 percent (3-for-9). S&T was able to stay in the game thanks in large part to its defense and rebounding.

After its slow start the Lady Miners began to heat up making 7 of their next 10 shots in building their largest lead of the night at 23-12 with less than four minutes to play in the opening half.NKU eventually closed to within six on Ellen Holton's second three of the frame with 2:47 to play.

S&T stretched its lead back to nine on a layup by Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) and free throw by Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) with just over a minute remaining in the half. The Norse made it a seven point game at the break as Jamie Hamlet hit a layup with 0:40 to play.

NKU was 7-for-18 (39 percent) from the floor in the frame and led in scoring by Holton with eight.

The Lady Miners shot 38 percent (9-of-24) from the field and were 7-for-8 at the charity stripe. They outrebounded the Norse 17-9 in the stanza. Parks had nine for S&T while Meyer dropped home six and Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) added five.

S&T was able to hold the Norse at arm's length for the first five-plus minutes of the second half retaining a six-point advantage.NKU went on an 8-2 run spanning nearly three minutes tying the game with 10:17 to play. Casse Mogan had six points in the run and Holton added the other bucket.

The two sides' swapped baskets then the Lady Miners went on a 7-0 run extending its lead to 42-35 with less than six to play. Meyer had five of those points. The Norse cut the lead to 44-40 with 1:40 to play as Stephanie Hodges converted on a layup.

D'Naya Mims (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy) made it a six point margin hitting a pair of free throws with 1:12 to go. Mogan made it a four point game again hitting a pair of free throws with 0:31 to play. Forced to foul NKU sent Kemp to the line where she hit both extending the lead back to six with 0:29 left.

The Norse refused to die as Hamlet buried a three in front of NKU's bench to make it 48-45 with 0:25 to play. NKU fouled Kemp again with 0:21 left, but this time she missed both leaving the door open.

The Norse took advantage as Holton banked home a three from the top of the key with 0:14 left. S&T had the final chance to win the game but were unable to get a shot away and forced the game into overtime.

In the first overtime NKU took its first lead since early in the contest on a jumper by Mogan with 3:22 left.The Lady Miners tied it up as Parks hit a pair of free throws and then retook the lead on her jumper at 52-50 with 2:14 to play.

Mogan answered right back with a jumper of her own tying the game at 52 with 1:41 left. Parks gave S&T the lead back hitting a pair of free throws with 0:23 to go. Mogan answered drawing Meyer's fifth foul and she went to the line with 0:11 to play and hit both tosses to tie it back up.

Again the Lady Miners had a chance to win but Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein)'s three at the buzzer was blocked.

Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City) came alive in the second overtime scoring seven of her nine points. She hit a pair of free throws to give S&T the lead for good to start the frame. Shanece Miller hit 1-of-2 at the line to make it a one point game with 4:12 to play. That would be the closest the Norse got the rest of the way.

Kemp hit her second triple of the night to extend the lead to four with less than four remaining.

After Mogan cut the lead to two, Washington responded with five straight points extending the lead to 64-57 with just over 2:25 to play. Knar put the game away hitting a three from the corner with 1:42 left to extend the lead to 67-57.

Bowling hit a layup and Mogan added a free throw as NKU was unable to get the deficit under seven.

Mogan was a handful to stop in the second half and overtime periods scoring 23 of her game-high 27 points. She was 9-of-15 from the floor and 5-for-6 at the line. Mogan and Holton combined for 44 of the team's 60 points. As a team, the Norse shot 40.4 percent (23-for-57) from the floor but was just 10-of-16 (63 percent) at the line.

S&T finished the game shooting just 39 percent from the floor (20-for-52) but was 24-of-30 at the charity stripe. Meyer and Parks had 15 points apiece to lead the Lady Miners while Kemp added 11. Washington finished with a career-high 13 rebounds.

S&T dominated the glass outrebounding NKU by a 43-to-27 margin.

The Lady Miners conclude their three-game home stand on Sunday afternoon against Bellarmine beginning at 12 p.m.
