Box Score

(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners let a nine point lead with just over three minutes left in regulation slip as Lewis outscored them 10-1 the rest of regulation and 17-12 in overtime to win 79-74 in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament on Saturday night in Rolla.

S&T (20-7) got off to a great start scoring the first eight points of the game and built an 11 point lead 11 minutes into the contest. Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) scored seven of those points. The Flyers (12-15) got back within two on a basket by Labrenthia Murdock with 4:18 left in the first half.

Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) and Kemp kept the Lady Miners up by five with 2:43 left in the opening half, but Kady Currin kept Lewis within striking distance with a three at the 1:25 mark. Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City) sent S&T into the locker room with a four point lead on a layup with less than a minute left.

Both teams shot over 40 percent in the opening frame with the Lady Miners making 13-of-28 from the floor while the Flyers made exactly 40 percent (10-for-25). S&T won the rebounding battle 17-to-14. Kemp had nine to lead the Lady Miners while Murdock led all scorers with 10.

Lewis scored the first bucket of the second half before S&T ran off four straight to take a 33-27 lead just over a minute in. The Flyers answered with six straight tying the game on Sam Rinehart's three from the corner a little over a minute later.

The two sides traded baskets before Kemp put the Lady Miners back in front with her third triple of the night. The lead grew to seven on a layup by D'Naya Mims (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy) before Lewis climbed back to within three at the 10:08 mark.

Mims put S&T back up by five with a layup before the Flyers tied it with five straight including a three by Currin at the 8:34 mark.

Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) gave the Lady Miners the lead back with a three but Shaw made it a one point game with a layup on the ensuing possession.

Kemp's fourth three of the night put S&T back in front by four at the 6:46 mark but once again Lewis continued to hang around with four straight to tie the game nearly a minute later.

S&T built its largest lead of the frame with nine straight points in a span of two minutes. Chelsea Stangel (Manitowoc, Wisc./Roncalli ) started it with a driving layup to put the Lady Miners back in front. Kemp's fifth three of the game put S&T up 57-52 with 4:39 to play. Kemp and Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) then capped the run with a pair of buckets.

The Flyers scored five points in a span of 0:24 to cut the deficit to 61-57 on a three by Currin. S&T had a chance to extend its lead to six with just over a minute left but Knar made just 1-of-2 at the charity stripe.

After a missed three by Currin, Meyer was fouled but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 keeping it at a five point margin.

Shaw made it a one possession game on the ensuing trip with a layup. After a Lewis timeout, the Lady Miners broke the initial pressure before turning it over with 0:32 left. Kelly Monaco then tied the game with a three with 0:20 left.

S&T had the game's final possession but Washington's layup at the buzzer was short sending the game into overtime.

The Flyers won the opening tip and went right down the floor scoring on a layup by Murdock to take its first lead of the night 0:04 into the extra frame.

Meyer tied it on the next trip with a driving layup as the shot clock wound down. That would be the closest the game was the rest of the way as Monaco hit a three right in front of the Flyer bench to make it 67-64 with 4:12 to play.

Turpel put Lewis ahead by five with a jumper off an offensive rebound, and then she and Murdock hit 3-of-4 at the line to make it 72-64 with 1:16 to play.

The Lady Miners got as close as five on two different occasions but the Flyers made their free throws down the stretch and Meyer threw in a jumper at the buzzer for the final margin.

Lewis was 3-of-5 from the floor in the overtime and 10-for-12 at the foul line. Murdock and Monaco had 12 of the 17 points in the extra frame. S&T was just 4-for-14 from the floor and 4-of-7 at the line in OT.

The Lady Miners shot 46.2 percent from the floor (30-of-65) while the Flyers were 26-for-56 (46.4 percent). Each team hit eight three's. The difference in the game was at the foul line as Lewis was 19-for-25 while S&T was only 6-of-12.

Kemp had a career-high 23 points to lead the Lady Miners. Washington and Meyer had 12 apiece.

Murdock had 23 to lead the Flyers. Currin finished with 19 while Shaw had 14 and Monaco dropped in 10.

S&T will have to wait until Sunday, March 6, to find out if it will make the NCAA Midwest Regional.
