Cold shooting dooms Lady Miners in 64-48 loss at Maryville

(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners shot a season low 28 percent in its 64-48 loss at Maryville on Thursday evening. S&T recorded season lows in points (48), field goals made (15) and three-point field goal percentage (12.5 percent).

S&T (17-6, 11-4 GLVC) scored the game's opening bucket before the Saints (10-13, 5-10 GLVC) answered with eight straight points to grab the early lead. The Lady Miners closed to within 10-8, but Maryville ran off five straight to extend its lead back to seven points.

S&T got within a bucket at 24-22 with 4:15 to play, but the Saints responded with a 14-2 run to build their largest lead of the half at 38-24 with less than a minute to play in the frame. Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) brought the Lady Miners back within 11 with a three, but Erica Lorton hit 1-of-2 at the line with 0:01.4 left giving Maryville a 39-27 lead at the break.

S&T shot just 36 percent (10-for-28) from the floor and was only 2-for-7 from three. Its free throw shooting kept them in the game as it was 5-of-7 at the stripe. Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City) and Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) had eight points each to lead the Lady Miners.

The Saints shot nearly 50 percent (15-for-31) from the field and were deadly from downtown connecting on 7-of-16 (44 percent). Maryville outrebounded S&T 20-17 and had 10 second chance points. Abby Duethman had 12 points to lead the Saints.

Maryville extended its lead to 15 on a three to begin the second half by JoAnn Thompson. The game remained at a 15 point margin for the next couple of minutes before S&T began cutting into the deficit.

The Lady Miners got the lead to under 10 on a free throw shot by Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) with 11:52 left in the contest. That free throw was part of a 7-0 run as S&T closed to within 50-45 on a put back by Parks with 8:36 to play.

Unfortunately for the Lady Miners that would be the last field goal they made and would be held to three points the rest of the game.

Angela Pepowski pushed the lead back to 10 with a pair of jumpers and S&T wouldn't get closer than seven the rest of the way as the Saints closed the game on a 14-3 run.

S&T shot just 20 percent (5-for-25) from the floor in the second half and was 0-of-9 from behind the arc. The Lady Miners dominated on the glass 28-12, but turned it over 13 times in the second stanza resulting in 11 points.

Washington had 12 to lead S&T while Parks finished with 10. D'Naya Mims (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy) dropped in eight.

Maryville shot just 28 percent (7-for-25) in the second half and was 2-of-10 from three, but was 9-for-9 at the charity stripe. Duethman led the Saints with 16 points while Pepowski had 12.

S&T returns to action on Monday night traveling to Springfield, Mo., to take on Drury at 5:45 p.m.
