Box Score

(Kansas City, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners certainly didn't do themselves any favor down the stretch of its 52-51 win at Rockhurst on Tuesday night. S&T missed eight of its final 10 free throws and got a steal on the game's final possession to escape the Hawks upset bid.

The Lady Miners (10-2, 4-0 GLVC) ran their win streak to a season-high eight games and matched the 2005-06 team with its best start in league play.

S&T got out to a quick 7-4 lead to start the game before the Hawks (4-8, 0-4 GLVC) hit them with a 12-4 run to build its biggest lead of the game at 16-11 with 7:06 remaining in the opening frame. Bri Edwards and Megan Cook had four each in the run for Rockhurst.

The Lady Miners responded with an 8-0 run of its own to regain the lead. Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) started it off with a three then Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City) scored the next five.

The Hawks retook the lead by scoring nine of the next 11 points to grab a 25-21 lead. Cook's three with just over a minute left in the half gave Rockhurst that four point advantage.

Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) made it a two point deficit at the half hitting a 15-foot jumper with 0:41 left.

S&T outscored the Hawks 12-to-8 in the paint and doubled them up in points off turnovers but shot only 36 percent (10-for-27) from the floor. Rockhurst had a 16-to-12 edge on the glass. Meyer had six to lead the Lady Miners while Washington had five.

Cook had seven points to lead the Hawks while Edwards had four.

The Lady Miners started the second half strong going on a 17-to-4 over the first eight minutes of the second half to grab a 40-29 lead. The game remained around a 10 point deficit until the seven minute mark when the Hawks Shelby Geiman began to take over. She scored eight straight including a pair of threes that pulled Rockhurst within 45-43 with 5:23 remaining.

The two teams traded baskets before Kemp hit her second three of the night to push the lead back to five points just over a minute later.

That's when S&T's troubles at the foul line began as Kemp went to the line for a chance to make it a seven point game but she missed both. After a Rockhurst free throw cut it to a four point contest Kemp went back to the line and made 1-of-2 to push the lead back to five.

The Hawks took advantage of those misses scoring five straight and tied the game on a three-pointer by Bri Edwards.

Meyer had a chance to give the Lady Miners the lead back but she missed both free throws but Yael Pelleg (Rishon Lezion, Israel/) ran down the loose ball and was fouled. She went to the line with 1:29 left in the game and made 1-of-2 to give S&T the lead back.

After a couple of stops on the defensive end the Lady Miners had a chance to seal the game with 0:20 left but Pelleg missed both free throws and the Hawks got the rebound and the chance to win the game.

S&T came up with its biggest stop of the night as Chrissy Sarcone drove into the lane but she lost the ball and the Lady Miners recovered the loose ball with 0:00.6 left and were able to hold on for the win.

Washington finished with a career-high 17 points, 12 in the second half, to lead S&T. Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) recorded her second straight double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Edwards finished with 13 to pace the Hawks while Sarcone and Geiman had 10 each.

The Lady Miners finished the game shooting 33 percent (17-for-51) from the floor and were 3-of-7 from downtown and 15-of-26 at the charity stripe.

Rockhurst shot 39 percent (20-for-51) from the floor but were only 4-of-16 from behind the arc and were 7-of-9 at the foul line.

S&T will be back on the road on Thursday night traveling to Owensboro, Ky., to take on Kentucky Wesleyan beginning at 5:15 p.m.
