(Romeoville, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners gave it a valiant effort in trying to rally from a 14 point second half deficit but came up short in its 68-64 loss at Lewis on Saturday. S&T had no answer for Jenny Turpel and Devon Carbaugh as the duo accounted for 56 percent of the Flyer offense.
The Lady Miners (14-5, 8-3 GLVC) got off to a slow start as they fell behind 8-2 within the first four minutes of the contest. The deficit grew to seven before S&T went on a 11-4 run over the next three minutes to tie the game on a three by Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein).
D'Naya Mims (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy) gave the Lady Miners their first lead of the contest hitting 1-of-2 at the foul line to make it 16-15 at the midway point of the frame. The lead would be short lived though as Jenny Turpel scored the next four points for the Flyers (9-9, 5-5 GLVC) to make it 19-16.
Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) made it a one point game hitting a jumper in the lane but that would be the closest S&T got the rest of the half as Lewis went on a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to build a 29-20 edge.
Yael Pelleg (Rishon Lezion, Israel/) pulled the Lady Miners within six with a three before the Flyers rattled off seven straight to take their biggest lead of the half at 36-23.
Mims made it an 11 point game at the break with a jumper in the paint with 0:03 left.
Lewis shot 52 percent (15-for-29) from the floor in the opening stanza and was led in scoring by Turpel with 16 and Devon Carbaugh with 11.
S&T was 12-for-31 (39 percent) from the floor and led in scoring by Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) with six and Mims with five.
The Lady Miners were able to cut the Flyers halftime lead to nine on two different occasions early in the second half but each time Lewis had an answer.
S&T made just 3 of its first 14 field goals in the second half as the Flyers extended its halftime lead to 50-36 nearly eight minutes in.
The game remained in double figures until the 6:42 mark when Mims hit a layup to pull the Lady Miners within 56-48. They had a chance to get closer but turned it over on the ensuing possession.
Lewis took advantage scoring five of the next six points to push its lead back to 14 with 3:42 to play.
S&T made a charge over the next two minutes cutting it down to six on a three-point play by Meyer with 1:43 left.
Labrenthia Murdock pushed the lead back to eight hitting a driving layup with 1:16 left. After a missed layup by Knar, Kady Currin was fouled and hit both free throws to make it 67-57 with 1:00 minute to play.
The Lady Miners refused to go away as they scored five straight at the foul line in a span of 0:10 to get within five with 0:36 left.
S&T fouled Murdock and she missed both free throws with 0:35 left leaving the door open for the Lady Miners.
S&T couldn't take advantage though as Meyer committed an offensive foul with 0:24 left.
Murdock was again fouled but this time hit 1-of-2 at the line to make it a six point game.
Mims put home a put back with 0:05 left for the final points.
Mims led four S&T players in double figures with 13 points. Meyer had 11 while Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City) and Knar had 10 each. The Lady Miners shot 39 percent in the second half and finished the game 23-for-59 (39 percent) from the floor. S&T was 15-of-20 at the foul line but only 3-for-12 from three.
Turpel had a game-high 21 points to lead three Flyers in double figures. Carbaugh had 17 while Kelly Monaco had 10. Lewis shot 45 percent in the second stanza and finished the game 24-for-49 (49 percent) from the floor. It shot 69 percent at the foul line but just 12 percent from three.
S&T returns to action Saturday afternoon when it hosts Maryville University to kick off a three-game home stand beginning at 1 p.m.
