(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners led from start to finish en route to its seventh straight win 74-61 at Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday afternoon. S&T shot a season-high 58.1 percent (25-of-43) from the floor and went 6-of-9 from behind the three-point line.
Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City) scored the first four points of the game for the Lady Miners (9-2, 3-0 GLVC) and they didn't look back from there. The Tritons (5-6, 0-3 GLVC) got as close as one early on but no closer. S&T slowly pulled away and built a 12-5 lead six minutes into the contest.
The game got no closer than two points the rest of the half as the Lady Miners built a ten point lead at 34-24 on Chelsea Stangel (Manitowoc, Wisc./Roncalli )'s second three of the half.
UMSL cut into that deficit closing the first half by scoring six of the final eight points to close within 36-31 at the intermission.
The Lady Miners shot a blistering 69 percent (11-for-16) from the floor in the opening half and were led in scoring by Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) with nine, Stangel with eight and Washington with six.
The Tritons shot only 39 percent (10-for-26) from the floor but were able to stay in the contest thanks to its three-point shooting at 5-for-8. Kelly Mitchell had 10 points while Caitlyn Moody had eight.
S&T opened the second half strong going on a 20-8 run to build a 56-39 advantage just over six minutes into the frame. Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) had six in the run while Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) had five and Parks had three.
The Lady Miners would be held scoreless for the next four minutes allowing UMSL to close to within 56-45 with 9:32 to play in the game.
Kemp had the answer though burying her third trey of the afternoon to push the lead back to 14. That three ignited S&T as it scored eight straight to build its biggest advantage of the afternoon at 64-45.
The lead remained in double digits the rest of the way as the Tritons got as close as 13 points with 0:11 left.
The Lady Miners shot 52 percent (14-for-27) from the floor in the second half and made 50 percent from behind the arc. Kemp had nine, Meyer dropped in seven while Parks had five.
Parks finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead S&T while Kemp had 13 and Washington finished with 10.
The Lady Miners outrebounded UMSL by a 34-to-26 margin including 23-to-13 in the second half. S&T got plenty of contributions from its bench as it outscored the Tritons by a 30-to-13 margin.
UMSL shot just 36 percent (20-of-55) from the floor and were 8-of-18 from downtown. Moody and Mitchell paced the Tritons combining for 36 points. Sherry Glennie had eight rebounds.
The Lady Miners return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Kansas City for a match-up against Rockhurst beginning at 5:30 p.m.
