Lady Miners bounce back with convincing win over Saint Joseph’s

(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners bounced back from a tough loss on Saturday with a convincing 87-48 win over Saint Joseph's on Monday night at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. S&T scored a season-high 87 points and shot a season-high 94 percent at the foul line.

The Lady Miners (14-3, 8-1 GLVC) got off to a slow start from the floor making only one of its first eight shots but were still able to lead thanks to its free throw shooting as it was a perfect 6-for-6 from the stripe.

The Pumas (6-10, 3-5 GLVC) stayed right with S&T though as there was four ties and two lead changes in the first 10 minutes. They held leads of 13-12 and 15-14 before the Lady Miners offense began to come alive.

Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) started it off with six straight points then Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) hit a layup to make it 24-18 with 7:22 left in the stanza. Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) pushed the lead to nine with a three, but SJC continue to hang in by scoring six of the next eight points to close within 29-23 with just over four minutes left.

The Lady Miners then hit them with an 11-0 run over the next 2:30. The run was highlighted by back-to-back three's from Knar and three points from Meyer.

Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City) gave S&T its biggest lead of the half at 18 points with a jumper with 0:07 left.

The Lady Miners warmed up after its cold start by hitting over 60 percent of its shots the remainder of the frame to finish at 52 percent (15-for-29) from the floor. Meyer had 13 while Knar had nine.

The Pumas were 10-of-24 (42 percent) from the floor but just 1-of-7 from three and were led in scoring by Natalie Applehans with five and four others with four.

S&T thoroughly dominated the second half shooting nearly 60 percent (19-for-32) from the floor and outscored the Pumas by a 44-23 margin. The Lady Miners grabbed 19 rebounds, scored 24 points in the paint and had 12 points off turnovers.

S&T's bench scored 23 times in the second frame and finished the game with 38.

After starting the game 1-for-8, the Lady Miners finished the contest 34-for-61 (56 percent) from the field and outrebounded the Pumas by nearly 20 boards. They also had 25 assists led by Washington with six and Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) with five.

S&T's defense was just as impressive holding one of the best three-point shooting teams in the league to a 2-of-17 night from the perimeter and allowed only one player to reach double figures. It held Saint Joseph's to just 35 percent (15-for-43) shooting from the field and 26 percent in the second half.

Meyer led four players in double figures with 17. Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) had 12 while Washington had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Knar chipped in with 12 as well.

Jasmyne Reynolds had 13 to lead the Pumas while Jen Szala and Applehans had seven each.

The Lady Miners hit the road again this weekend traveling up north to take on Wisconsin-Parkside in Somers, Wis., on Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
