(Indianapolis, Ind.) – Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia)'s jumper from the middle of the lane with 0:02.5 left gave the Missouri S&T Lady Miners a 73-72 win at Indianapolis on Thursday night and extended its winning streak to a school record 11 games. Meyer scored S&T's last four points in the final minute to rally them from a 72-69 deficit.
The first half was a shootout between the two teams as the Lady Miners (13-2, 7-0 GLVC) shot nearly 70 percent (18-for-26) from the floor while the Greyhounds (8-6, 3-3 GLVC) were at 57 percent (18-for-26) from the field.
The 'Hounds raced out to an early lead before S&T caught up with them and took its first lead of the contest on a jumper by Meyer at the 14:58 mark. UIndy regained the lead on the ensuing possession as Katy McIntosh put back on an offensive rebound.
The Lady Miners then went on a 12-4 run over the next four minutes to build its largest lead of the half at 23-16. Katelyn Heil (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) and Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) each hit a three-pointer in the run.
The Greyhounds answered back with seven straight of its own to tie the game at 23-all nearly two minutes later.
The sides traded buckets on the next two possessions before the Lady Miners scored six straight to grab a 34-28 advantage on a fast break layup by Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) with 6:04 remaining.
The lead would be short lived though as the 'Hounds ran off seven straight and regained the lead at 35-34 on a three-pointer by Shelby Wall.
Parks scored five straight points to give S&T the lead back at 39-35 with less than three to play in the frame.
Indianapolis though refused to go away as the two sides traded baskets in the final three minutes. The 'Hounds regained the lead on a pair of free throws by McIntosh with 0:28 lead at 44-42. Meyer tied the game up for the Lady Miners with 0:11 left but McIntosh had the final answer as she hit a running off balance jumper with 0:02 left to give UIndy the 46-44 at the half.
Parks led all scorers with 13 points while Meyer had nine and Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City) and Heil had six each. McIntosh had 11 to lead the Greyhounds while Cayla Keegan and Wall had seven each.
The second half was just as evenly matched with seven ties and three lead changes. The two sides traded baskets the first five minutes as it was still tied at the 15:00 mark.
Parks and Washington scored the next five points for S&T as it took a 59-54 lead at the 12:20 mark. That lead grew to six on a three from Knar at the midway point of the stanza.
McIntosh and Wall sandwiched a pair of three's around a layup by Washington to tie the game at 64-all with 6:40 left in the contest.
Parks hit a pair of free throws to give the Lady Miners the lead back then Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) made it four with a layup with 4:25 to play.
The 'Hounds refused to go away though as Heather Gonser made a three to make it 68-67 just over a minute later.
Kemp had a chance to push the advantage back to three but made only 1-of-2 at the foul line with 2:47 left.
McIntosh put UIndy back ahead with an old-fashioned three-point 70-69 only 0:20 later.
Washington tried to give S&T the lead back but couldn't convert on her layup and the Greyhounds got the rebound.
McIntosh made it a three-point advantage on a layup with 1:25 to play.
Knar missed a couple of shots but the Lady Miners were able to keep the ball alive and Meyer put home a putback with 1:01 left to make it 72-71.
The 'Hounds tried to go back up by three with under 0:30 left as McIntosh had a wide open path to the basket but Washington slid over blocked the shot and got the rebound to set up the game winning possession.
Knar missed a wide open three at the top of the key with 0:15 left that would've given them the lead. S&T was able to maintain control as the ball was knocked out of bounds by the 'Hounds.
UIndy knocked the Lady Miners first two inbounds attempts away but on the third one Meyer hit Washington who gave it back to Meyer as she used the entire rim to get the shot to fall.
The Greyhounds had one more chance but their last ditch effort was intercepted by Knar and S&T was able to run out the clock.
After both teams hot shooting first halves, the defenses took over in the second as each side shot under 40 percent.
The Lady Miners finished the game shooting 53 percent (29-for-55) from the floor. Parks scored a career-high 25 points to lead S&T. Meyer and Washington had 13 apiece.
The 'Hounds were 27-of-56 (48 percent) from the floor and led in scoring by McIntosh with 19. Wall had 12 while Gonser finished with 10.
The Lady Miners return home Saturday night to take on conference rival Drury beginning at 5:30 p.m.
