Late goal in overtime sends Miners to tough loss against Hawks

9/19/2010 5:14:39 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T got the first goal of Sunday's game with Quincy just 1:06 into play – but the Hawks scored the final goal with only 36 seconds left in the second overtime to hand the Miners a tough 3-2 setback in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at the S&T Soccer Field.
Jack Wedemeier scored on a straight ahead free kick from about 25 yards out in the final minute of the second overtime period to give the Hawks their first and only lead of the afternoon. The Miners, who fell for the first time this season, were whistled for a hand ball as they were trying to get out of their own end and Wedemeier hit the direct kick into the top left corner past S&T goalkeeper Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) to give Quincy the victory.
The Miners broke on top 66 seconds into the game when Ryan Muich (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon)'s free kick was deflected right to Brian Seawright (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton), who drilled a low shot by QU goalkeeper D.J. Lampert. Seawright's goal was the fastest to start a game for the Miners since last September when Jervis Atagana (Columbia, Mo./Hickman ) scored 40 seconds into play against Illinois-Springfield.
However, the Hawks tied the score at the 25:59 mark when Ryan Seifert scored on a shot he hit in traffic at the edge of the box.
S&T regained the lead just under eight minutes later when Peter Haw (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) fed Kyle Schraier (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College ) on a breakaway and he beat Lampert to his left to give the Miners 2-1 lead they would take to the intermission.
The Miners were able to hold onto that lead until the 73:40 mark, at which point they were unable to get a ball cleared and Corey Eatherton scored on a shot from the top of the box to knot the game at two.
McNamee finished the day with seven saves for the Miners (2-1-2 overall and in the GLVC), as the Hawks outshot S&T 22-12 on the afternoon. Quincy (3-2, 2-1 GLVC), who scored seven times Friday in a win at Maryville, also had a 10-7 edge in shots on net.
The Miners will play their next four games away from home, beginning Friday with a non-conference contest at Truman State at 3 p.m. S&T will resume GLVC play next Sunday against Drury in Springfield, Mo.
