Lady Miners run win streak to three with 60-46 win over Illinois-Springfield

(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners ran its winning streak to three games with a 60-46 win over Illinois-Springfield on Saturday afternoon in Rolla. Except for an early tie the Lady Miners lead wire-to-wire.

The game didn't open well for either team as both sides struggled to shoot the ball. It took nearly nine minutes before S&T (5-2, 2-0 GLVC) got into double figures on a jumper by Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown). Trailing 10-4, Illinois-Springfield (3-3, 0-2 GLVC) ran off the next six to tie the game at 10 all with less than nine to play.

The Lady Miners responded in a big way breaking the game open with a 15-2 run spanning 5:30. Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City) had four points in the run and the S&T defense held the Prairie Stars to just two field goals over the final nine minutes. The last one came on a lay-up at the buzzer sending the Lady Miners into the half with a 27-16 lead.

After its frigid start S&T warmed up to finish the stanza shooting 12-for-29 (41.4 percent) from the floor. The Lady Miners outrebounded UIS by a 21-to-18 margin and had seven assists to just one for the Prairie Stars.

Illinois-Springfield was held to 23.1 percent (6-of-26) shooting from the floor.

Washington and Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) had six points apiece to lead the Lady Miners while Mallory Beck and Paulina Pogorzelski had four points each for UIS.

S&T opened the second half on an 8-2 run to build a 17 point lead just over four minutes in. The lead remained in double figures for the rest of the game. The Prairie Stars got as close as 35-24 with 13:54 remaining but no closer than that.

The Lady Miners gradually begin to pull away eventually building its lead to 60-35 with 4:17 left in the contest.

Illinois-Springfield scored the game's last 11 points for the final margin.

S&T shot 41.7 percent (15-for-36) from the floor in the second half and forced eight turnovers resulting in 10 points. It had eight offensive rebounds which it turned into seven points.

UIS was only 8-of-32 (25 percent) from the field in the frame but went to the foul line 15 times, making 13 of them which kept them in the ball game.

The Lady Miners finished the game shooting 27-for-65 (41.5 percent) from the field and won the battle on the glass 42-to-36. They finished with 15 offensive rebounds resulting in 11 second chance points. Defensively they forced 22 turnovers which they turned into 18 points.

S&T held the Prairie Stars to season-lows in points (44), field-goal percentage (27.5 percent), assists (1) and three-point field goal percentage (13.3 percent). It marked the sixth time this season it's held a team to under 65 points and fourth with less than 60.

Meyer finished with a double-double leading the Lady Miners with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Washington, Hailee Parks (Sullivan, Mo./Sullivan) and Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) had eight points apiece.

Alyssa Palmer had 14 points to lead all scorers while Pogorzelski had 10 points.

S&T returns to action next Friday night at home against Kentucky State beginning at 7 p.m.
