(Rolla, Mo.) – Turnovers. That was the story of the night as the Missouri S&T Lady Miners turned it over 19 times in its 61-52 loss to Nebraska-Omaha at home on Thursday night. The 19 turnovers were a season-high which resulted in 30 points for the Mavericks.
S&T (2-1) got out to an eight point five minutes into the contest despite making only one of its first seven shots. Fareedah Washington (Forrest City, Ark./Forrest City) and Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) provided the spark early scoring 10 of the first 12 points.
UNO (2-0) responded with nine straight to grab the lead at 13-12 on a three by Amanda Woodring with 11 minutes to play in the opening half. D'Naya Mims gave S&T the lead back with back-to-back lay-ups to make it 16-13.
Heather Pohl answered Mims's baskets with back-to-back three's giving the Mavericks their final lead of the half. Meyer and Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) then combined to score seven straight points giving S&T a 25-21 lead at the 3:11 mark.
The Lady Miners couldn't hold the lead though as UNO scored the final four points of the frame to send both teams into the break tied at 25.
Both teams struggled to shot the ball in the opening stanza as S&T made 11-of-32 (34.4 percent) while the Mavs connected on only 32 percent (9-for-28) of its attempts.
The Lady Miners held a 25-to-16 edge on the glass and a 16-to-6 advantage in points in the point but were outscored 11-6 in turnovers
Meyer had eight to lead S&T while Mims and Washington dropped in six apiece. Pohl led all scorers with 13 points.
Nebraska-Omaha outscored the Lady Miners 16-to-9 in the first seven minutes of the second half to grab a 41-34 lead. Pohl's fourth three of the night gave UNO its biggest lead of the game to that point.
S&T responded with seven straight points from Meyer and Mims to tie the game nearly two minutes later.
Unfortuanetly for the Lady Miners that would be the last time they were tied as the Mavericks ran off nine straight over the next four minutes, getting five from Carly Cantor, to take a 50-41 lead.
Meyer tried to keep S&T in it scoring six of its next eight points but it wasn't able to get closer than three the rest of the way.
The Lady Miners had a chance to cut the deficit to one with less than five minutes to play. Courtney Kemp (Fredricktown, Mo./Fredricktown) picked off a pass and drove in for a lay-up. She was hit from behind on the play resulting in a miss then Taylor Jensen (Farmington, Mo./Farmington) had a chance but she was also hit resulting in another miss. A scramble for the loose ball occurred and Meyer was called for her fourth foul.
That play turned out to be a four point swing as Jasamine Reeves hit both free throws to make it 54-49 and the Mavericks outscored S&T 7-3 down the stretch to pull away for the win.
Despite shooting 41 percent (9-for-22) from the floor, the Lady Miners turned it over 11 times in the second half which lead to 19 points for Omaha.
The Mavericks went 12-for-29 (41 percent) from the floor in the second half and connected on 10-of-11 at the foul line.
Pohl finished with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting and was 4-for-7 from behind the arc.
Meyer scored a career-high 20 points to lead three S&T players in double figures. Washington had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Mims had 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Miners return to action next Tuesday traveling up to Liberty, Mo., to take on William Jewell at 5:30 p.m.
