Beattie's late goal sends Miners to heartbreaking loss in regional final

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -- After Missouri S&T overcame a two-goal deficit in the second half on a pair of goals by Kyle Schraier (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College ), the Great Lakes Valley Conference's leading scorer -- Northern Kentucky's Steven Beattie -- ended up deciding the game by scoring with 2:27 remaining in regulation time to give the fourth-ranked Norse a 3-2 win over No. 21 Missouri S&T Sunday in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional championship game.

Beattie had a scoring opportunity blocked by the Miner defense with just under three minutes to play, but got a second chance 29 seconds later.  He hit a low shot from about eight yards away by S&T goalkeeper Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) for his 22nd goal of the season and to send NKU to the quarterfinal round for the second time in three years.

The Miners, who were making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament, finished the season with a record of 11-6-3.  S&T opened the regional with a 3-1 win over Ashland and won a share of the GLVC's regular season championship.

Schraier, a sophomore midfielder, scored twice in a span of just over five minutes to tie the contest after S&T trailed 2-0 at halfitme.  He scored his first goal at the 62:57 mark when he put in the rebound off a shot from Spencer Brinkmeyer (Kansas City, Mo./Oak Park).

He struck again at 68:08, off assists from J.J. Bilyeu (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) and Ryan Muich (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon), as he took a cross and put a shot past NKU goalkeeper Michael Lavric to knot the score at two apiece.

The Norse took a 2-0 lead in the first 9:08 of the contest, scoring at the 4:55 mark when Andrew Montgomery headed in Steven Beattie's corner kick and again just over four minutes later when Kevin Donnelly scored on a low angle from right in front of the net.

NKU had an 18-14 advantage in shots (S&T had an 11-8 lead in shots in the second half), with eight shots on goal to S&T's five.  Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) made five saves in the nets for the Miners.
