ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team opened the second half of its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule Sunday with a game that may have seemed tougher than anticipated by some, but it pulled out a
1-0 double overtime win at Maryville University on
David Kekec (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue)'s goal 3:51 into the second extra period.
While the Miners entered Sunday's game in a tie for third place on a percentage basis in the GLVC, the Saints were sitting next-to-last in the conference standings with just one league win. But as was the case a year ago when the Miners needed a last-minute goal to dispatch the Saints, Sunday's game was every bit as tough for the Miners to come away victorious.
It was a game where the teams combined for 63 shots – 40 by the Miners – but neither team was able to get one of the first 62 into the net. S&T had 16 shots in the opening half, 17 in the second half and seven more in overtime.
The Miners nearly scored the first goal with just over eight minutes to play, but
Jervis Atagana (Columbia, Mo./Hickman )'s shot went off the post. S&T then dominated play during the overtime sessions, outshooting the Saints 7-1 and getting three of their 13 corner kick opportunities during that span.
Kekec, who had a shot go wide three minutes into the second overtime period, made his next chance count 42 seconds later as he put a shot past Saint goalkeeper Bobby Niedzwiecki to give S&T, now 5-1-2 in the GLVC, its fifth win in conference play and move it into a three-way tie for second place with Quincy and Northern Kentucky in the GLVC.
Lewis, who handed NKU its first loss of the season Sunday with a 2-0 win, leads the league by .028 with a 7-2 conference mark.
Donny Gesell (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) was credited with the shutout for the Miners as he finished with 10 saves on the day. The Miners have now recorded three consecutive shutout victories and will try to extend their winning streak to four Friday when they host Kentucky Wesleyan in a 7:30 p.m. contest at the S&T Soccer Field.
Missouri S&T improved to 5-2-2 overall with Sunday's victory.
