ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The recent run of success that Missouri S&T's men's soccer team has enjoyed over Missouri-St. Louis continued Friday night, as the Miners broke open a close game with three second half goals en route to a
4-0 win over the Tritons.
The Miners, who entered Friday's game with 11 wins in the last 14 meetings with UMSL, made it 12 out of the last 15 over the Tritons by cashing in on their opportunities during the middle stages of the game. After
Mario Calderon (Mexico City, Mexico/ITESM) was stopped on a penalty kick opportunity just over 10 minutes into the game, the Miners were able to break on top late in the first half as
Sam Shaffer (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) scored an unassisted goal at the 40:18 mark.
S&T needed only 8:23 of the second half to double its advantage, doing so when
Brian Seawright (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) scored his team-high fourth goal of the season.
Peter Vaccaro (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) notched his first goal of the year off an assist from
Trent Doerner (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) at the 68:44 mark to give S&T a 3-0 lead. The Miners' final goal was an own goal with just under six minutes remaining in the game.
The Miners held a 9-7 advantage in shots for the game and had seven shots on net as opposed to two by the Tritons. S&T goalkeeper
Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) turned away both of the shots on goal to record his record-tying 15
th career shutout, matching the mark set by his older brother Mike from 2004-07.
Missouri S&T (4-2-2, 4-1-2 GLVC), which moved up to fourth place in the conference standings with Friday's victory, will return to action Sunday when it takes on Maryville University in St. Louis in a 2:30 p.m. contest.
