ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T wasted little time in taking a lead Sunday, then let its defense do the rest to win a physical
2-0 battle with Southern Indiana at the S&T Soccer Field.
The victory keeps the Miners in second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, just one-half game behind Lewis, who knocked off Saint Joseph's 6-0 Sunday. S&T is currently one-half game ahead of Northern Kentucky, the team it will face Friday at NKU. Northern Kentucky knocked off Quincy 2-0 Sunday.
The Miners got a goal from
Peter Haw (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) just 27 seconds into play – the fastest opening goal on record in Miner soccer history – to take a quick lead. S&T had a couple of more scoring chances later in the half that were waved off due to offsides calls, thus it took a 1-0 lead to the intermission.
Missouri S&T added onto its lead early in the second half when
Sam Shaffer (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) was taken down in the box and was awarded a penalty kick, which he converted to double the S&T lead.
From that point, the Miner defense took over as it held its fifth straight opponent scoreless, extending that school record streak as well as its scoreless streak to 478:31. The Screaming Eagles finished with eight shots in the game, but only three of them made it to goalkeeper
Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ).
McNamee picked up his 16th career shutout Sunday to break the S&T career record he shared with his brother, Mike.
The Miners outshot USI (7-6, 5-6 GLVC) by a 19-8 margin in the contest and the victory improved their record to 7-2-2 overall and 7-1-2 in the GLVC.
