Lady Miners drop pair at St. Cloud State tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (St. Cloud, Minn.) – The Lady Miner volleyball squad dropped a pair of matches at the St. Cloud State tournament on Friday to Wayne State 3-1 and the host St. Cloud State Huskies 3-2 in St. Cloud, Minn.

In the evening match against SCSU (2-4) it was a pretty evenly played contest that saw 29 ties and 11 lead changes. Each side recorded 65 kills and piled up over 60 set assists. The Huskies had the slight edge in hitting percentage over S&T (2-5) .227-to-.199.

St. Cloud led for most of the first set getting out to an early 9-2 lead. The Lady Miners came back though and tied the set at 19 all on a pair of kills by Kit Spears (Valley Center, Kan./Valley Center). The Huskies regained a 23-20 advantage before Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) registered back-to-back kills getting S&T back within a point. It wouldn't get any closer though as SCSU took the set with back-to-back kills.

The second set was a role reversal as the Lady Miners led for most of the set and built its largest lead of the night at 21-15. The Huskies ran off six straight of their own to tie the set, but S&T was able to square the match at 1-1 by scoring the final four points of the set.

The third set went back and forth for the first 20 points as it was tied at 10-10. The Lady Miners ran off three of the next four points before St. Cloud used a 7-1 run to regain the lead at 17-14. The lead grew to five points before S&T began to chip away and eventually got back within one on yet another kill from Meyer. However, the Huskies scored three of the final four points to take the set 25-22 and the 2-1 lead.

The fourth set was even closer as there were 12 ties and five lead changes and neither side held more than a three point advantage. The Lady Miners got a strong offensive performance in the set recording 18 kills and were able to even the match up on a kill by Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ).

The final set saw S&T run off the first three points before the Huskies came back to tie it at 4 all. After trading the next six points SCSU took advantage of a couple of attack errors by the Lady Miners to take the 9-7 lead. Spears and Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled) kept S&T in the set with three kills but the offense was unable to overcome seven errors in the set as the Huskies won it 15-10.

Meyer led all players with 19 kills and recorded yet another double-double with her 13 digs. Klump finished the night with 12 kills. Katie Herington (Kalona, Iowa/Mid-Prairie) chipped in with nine kills while Lynsey Jorgenson and Spears had six apiece. Danielle Kracl (Omaha, Neb./Burke) finished with 32 set assists while Bridget Williams (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had a game-high in digs with 25.

In the opener on Friday against Wayne State (Neb.) (4-2) the Lady Miners fell dropped the first two sets and were unable to overcome the early deficit. Each of the first two sets were close for the balance of the sets but S&T was unable to answer late runs in each one by the Wildcats.

The third set was tied at 9-9 before the Lady Miners went on an 11-4 run to take a 20-13 advantage. Wayne State closed the deficit to three but S&T continued to pull away for the 25-18 win. The Lady Miners outhit the Wildcats .241-to-.091 in the frame.

The fourth set was all Wayne State as it scored the first five points of the set. S&T would close the gap to 6-5, but wasn't able to get any closer as the Wildcats scored 11 of the next 13 points to take a 17-7 advantage and wouldn't relinquish the lead on their way to a 25-16 win.

Meyer again led the Lady Miner offense with 11 kills and had 10 digs. Klump finished with seven kills and three block assists. Kaci Herron (Jonesboro, Ark./Jonesboro) and Herington chipped in with six and five kills respectively. Kracl finished with 32 of S&T's 35 set assists and Williams dug up 17 balls off the court.

The Lady Miners return to the court on Saturday taking on Ferris State at 11:30 a.m., and fifth ranked Nebraska-Kearney at 5:30 p.m.
