(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners hit a season-high .319 percent on its way to a
3-0 (25-15, 25-16 and 25-16) sweep of Central Methodist on Tuesday evening at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. The Lady Miners snapped their eight game losing streak with the win.
S&T (3-11) led throughout the first set scoring the first two points and never looking back. It's lead was extended to 11 midway through the set. The Eagles cut the lead to 17-10, but the Lady Miners ran off three straight points to push the lead back to double digits. Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) recorded back-to-back kills to end the set.
As a team S&T hit .433 percent in the opening frame with 14 kills against just one error in 30 chances. Meyer led the way with four kills in the frame.
In the second set there were three ties and a lead change early in the set before the Lady Miners broke the set open with a 6-1 run. CMU got within four before another quick burst by S&T stretched the lead back to seven. The lead grew to as many as 10 on back-to-back kills by Kaci Herron (Jonesboro, Ark./Jonesboro) and Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled). The Eagles would get it to within seven on a couple of errors by S&T but wouldn't get any closer as the Lady Miners scored three of the final four points to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
Central Methodist scored the first point of the third set, but after that it was all S&T scoring seven of the next eight points to grab a 7-2 lead. That lead would be cut to four on a couple of different occasions. The Lady Miners stretched the lead to 17-9 and coasted on in for the 25-16 win.
It was a very balanced offensive attack from S&T as it was led by Meyer with eight kills. Klump dropped in seven, Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) had six, and Herron contributed five while Kit Spears (Valley Center, Kan./Valley Center) and Katie Herington (Kalona, Iowa/Mid-Prairie) had four apiece. Danielle Kracl (Omaha, Neb./Burke) finished with 19 set assists.
The Lady Miners open up Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Friday evening in Quincy, Ill., against the Quincy Hawks beginning at 6 p.m.
