Miners avenge loss to Illinois-Springfield with 2-0 shutout

9/13/2009 6:24:33 PM

(Rolla, Mo.) – The last time Missouri S&T and Illinois-Springfield met, the Miners dominated the stat sheet outshooting the Prairie Stars 26-9, but came up on the short end losing 3-1. S&T made sure it wouldn't suffer the same fate the second time around defeating Illinois-Springfield 2-0 on Sunday avenging last season's loss in the process.

The Miners (2-1-1, 2-0-1 GLVC) needed only 40 seconds to score the game winner as Jervis Atagana (Columbia, Mo./Hickman ) received a cross from Nicolas Solano right in front of a wide open goal and put it into the back of the net for his first collegiate goal.

S&T had several other chances in the first half as they outshot the Prairie Stars (1-4, 0-3 GLVC) by a 12-2 margin putting six of those attempts on goal. UIS's keeper kept them in the game by making five saves in the frame.

The Miners continued applying pressure in the second half and again had several good looks but were unable to tack on another goal for a majority of the half. They put the game away with a goal in the 85th minute when Ryan Muich (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) ran down a long ball from Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ), beat the keeper one on one and put into a wide open goal for his first of the season.

S&T finished the contest outshooting the Illinois-Springfield 26-5 and 12-1 in shots on goal. Sam Shaffer (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) and Atagana led the offense with six and four shots respectively while combining for five of the shots on goal.

The Miners return to action on Friday evening traveling up to Quincy, Ill., for a Great Lakes Valley Conference match-up against Quincy beginning at 7:30 p.m.
