QUINCY, Ill. – A day after tying a school record with five hits in a game, Brandon Cogan (Missouri City, Texas/Hightower) fired a six-hit shutout for Missouri S&T in the first game of a doubleheader Monday at Quincy University, leading the Miners to a 5-0 win and a series win over the Hawks in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

 

Quincy took the nightcap 4-1 to salvage the final contest in the three-game weekend series.

 

Cogan was efficient in his outing, as the Hawks had only two innings in the contest where they had two hitters reach base. In the third, a double play erased the first runner to reach, then in the sixth the Hawks got two on with two outs, but Cogan got A.J. Terrill to ground out to end that threat.

 

It was the first shutout for the Miners in just over a year, when S&T blanked Rockhurst in both games of a doubleheader on March 29, 2008.

 

The Miners gave Cogan all the runs he needed in the second as they scored three times. S&T got three straight hits – off the bats of Cody Bass (Chattanooga, Okla./Chattanooga), Drew Davenport (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West) and Will Morrison – to get its first run of the inning, then Hunter Scheib (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) doubled home a run with one out.

 

S&T's third run of the inning came home on a sacrifice fly by Tim Kerouac (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara).

 

The Miners added two more in the fifth on a two-run single by Bass, giving him seven runs batted in during the series.

 

Bass and Thomas McCormick (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) had two hits apiece for the Miners, who played just their second errorless game of the season.

 

In game two, the Hawks got a run in the third on an RBI single from Justin Ritchhart, then got a two-run homer from Justin Dunning in the fourth and a solo shot from Daniel Entzeroth two innings later to extend their lead to 4-0.

 

S&T got on the board in the seventh as Cogan led off with a double, stole third and scored on an infield single by Eaf Redden (Gunter, Texas/Gunter). However, the Hawks (13-13, 3-4 GLVC West) got a double play to escape further damage in the seventh.

 

Zach Gronek took the loss, despite allowing only four hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. Cogan had four of the Miners' 10 hits in game two and finished the Quincy series by going 10-of-14 at the plate, raising his season average to .411 on the season.

 

Zac Helton (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) also had three hits for the Miners (9-19, 2-1 GLVC West), who will face Central Missouri (15-9) in a doubleheader Wednesday in Warrensburg, Mo.. Game time will be at 6 p.m.
