LAWTON, Okla. – Cameron spotted Missouri S&T an early lead, then put three multiple-run innings on the board after that to help complete a sweep of the two-game series between the teams with a
13-5 win Wednesday afternoon.
The 26th-ranked Aggies scored three times in the second, then posted four-run innings in the third and fifth to beat the Miners for the second day in succession.
The Miners broke out on top in the opening inning, taking advantage of a leadoff walk to get the first run of the contest.
Andrew Vance (Stilwell, Kan./Blue Valley ) drew the walk, stole second and later scored on
Thomas McCormick (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood)'s double.
The Aggies, however, answered with the three runs in the second off Miner starter
Zac Helton (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette), then tacked on four unearned tallies in the third as an error with two outs kept the inning alive. That error loaded the bases, then Chris Caves singled home two runs and Kyle Nyhart drove in another to force S&T to go to its bullpen.
S&T chipped away at the lead, getting a run in the fourth on an RBI double by
Grant Johnson (LaSalle, Ill./St. Bede Academy) and another in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by
Drew Davenport (McHenry, Ill./McHenry West), but the Aggies posted their second four-run inning in the fifth to break the game open.
The Miners were able to take advantage of some wildness from Aggie pitcher Kevin Ruud in the sixth, as two runs scored as the result of three wild pitches and a passed ball to cut the lead to 11-5. Cameron tacked on single runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the final result.
McCormick and
Will Morrison (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) had two hits apiece for the Miners, who had six in the game. Helton took the loss for S&T (7-18), who returns to action Saturday when it opens a four-game series at Quincy in its first divisional contests in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
