10/3/2009 8:13:26 PM

Box Score (Romeoville, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners battled hard but were still swept by the 13th ranked Lewis Flyers 3-0 (19-25, 17-25 and 21-25) on Saturday afternoon in Romeoville, Ill.

The opening set was tightly contested early on as there were five ties and three lead changes in the first 12 points of the contest. Lewis (16-3, 6-0 GLVC) began to take control with a 5-0 run getting a pair of kills by Colleen Mitros to erase S&T's (6-16, 2-4 GLVC) 6-5 lead. The Flyers eventually built a seven point lead late in the set on an attack error by Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled). The Lady Miners would cut the deficit to five at 24-19 staving off a couple of set points in the process before Nikki Maes knocked home a kill for the 25-19 win.

Each side had 12 kills in the stanza but S&T committed three more attack errors than Lewis did as the Flyers outhit the Lady Miners .146-to-.087.  Klump and Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) had four kills apiece for S&T while Stephanie Sagat and Mitros had three each for Lewis.

The Flyers hit nearly 42 percent in the second set as they lead for nearly the entire set on their way to a 25-17 win. The Lady Miner defense had no answer for the duo of Sagat and Sara deBuhr who accounted for nine of Lewis's 16 kills in the frame. Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) was the lone bright spot in the set as she had four kills to lead S&T. The Lady Miners were kept in the set thanks in part to six Flyer service aces.

The third set saw eight ties and four lead changes as neither side had more than a three point lead for a majority of the set. S&T led 9-8 before a 5-1 run by the Flyers gave them a 13-10 advantage. Sagat had three kills in the run. The Lady Miners bounced back getting kills from Klump and Bekebrede to tie it back up at 13 all. Lewis regained a three point lead before S&T went on a 7-2 run to overtake the Flyers and grab a 20-18 lead.

The Flyers responded though by scoring the next three points to regain the lead. The Lady Miners tied it back up at 21 on a kill by Katie Herington (Kalona, Iowa/Mid-Prairie) but were unable to retake the lead as Lewis scored the final four points of the match to win 25-21.

Bekebrede lead S&T with six kills while Meyer and Klump had five apiece. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) and Danielle Kracl (Omaha, Neb./Burke) each had 12 set assists and Bridget Williams (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) finished with a match-high 21 digs.

The Lady Miners are back in action on Tuesday evening when they travel to St. Louis, Mo., to take on Maryville University beginning at 7 p.m.
