No. 12 Northern Kentucky puts halt to Miners' winning streak at four

10/18/2009 7:19:09 PM

WAYNESVILLE, Mo. – Missouri S&T was playing from behind the entire afternoon and wound up on the losing end of a 3-1 decision to 12th-ranked Northern Kentucky Sunday afternoon, ending the Miners' four-game winning streak in the process.

The Norse, who handed third-ranked Drury its first loss of the season Friday, got on the scoreboard just 45 seconds into the contest when Alex Oeswein put a shot past Miner goalkeeper Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ).

S&T outshot the Norse 6-4 in the opening half, but went to the intermission trailing by a goal. NKU then got two goals from its top scorer, Steven Beattie, in the first 10 minutes of the second half to extend the lead.

Beattie, who got the assist on the first goal of the contest, scored his first goal on a shot from the right side of the box at the 48:05 mark. Nearly seven minutes later, he redirected a throw-in to give NKU a 3-0 lead.

The Miners averted the shutout with just under five minutes to go when Kyle Schraier (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College ) took a pass from David Kekec (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue) and got a shot by Norse goalkeeper Michael Lavric. S&T nearly got another goal moments later, but Lavric turned away an effort by Mario Calderon (Mexico City, Mexico/ITESM).

S&T had a 15-11 advantage in shots, but Lavric finished with eight saves for the Norse, who clinched a berth in the GLVC Tournament with the victory. McNamee made three saves in the nets for the Miners.

Sunday's game was moved to Waynesville and played on an artificial surface due to extremely wet field conditions at the S&T Soccer Field.

The Miners (6-5-1, 6-4-1 GLVC) will play their final two conference games on the road beginning Friday at the University of Indianapolis at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time.  Missouri S&T is currently in sixth place in the GLVC standings with one weekend of play remaining in a very tight race for the final playoff spots; only a game and a half separate six teams for the final three spots in the standings.
